Generator, Spooky, Gather

Generator, Spooky, Gather

Hey Bumfuzzlers! Seems we had a somewhat tumultuous patch this last Thursday as the powers at Facepunch were giving us some tough love! Despite that, the storm was weathered, and changes have been made! We’ve got loot modifications, gather rate changes, a new power source, new server listing description, stacking changes, server menu updates, a spooky mask and 2 discord polls begging your opinion and more!

Patch Overview

For those of you who would rather not read the list of changes in the last patch, here’s a solid overview of what we got.

Server Browser

Not sure why, but I’ve been contacted by a few people who say they can’t connect to the server, mainly due to not seeing it in the server list. Maybe this shouldn’t be surprising due to the recent changes to it.

If you find you have this issue, you can connect directly via the console.

  1. Press F1
  2. Go to the console
  3. Type connect 216.155.140.108:28016

That’ll do it.

Also, I’ve been trying to make the server’s representation in the server list better. That means I’ve updated the server description and modified the title to include common keywords for searching. I’ve also changed the name to Bumfuzzlertopia in case you were looking for the old name. This was only to give me more room in the server title – saved 4 characters lol

Language Filter

Now when you curse, it will show the word Bumfuzzler in orange so at least others know you cursed and didn’t type Bumfuzzler intentionally. This also ensures I’m no longer confused as to whether you’re talking to me 🙂 but then maybe you are talking to me saying nasty things? Yikes! I hope not lol

As the resident bot says, “It’s not a restriction. It’s meant to be funny and promote the server name. Why not expand your vocabulary? I know how to say 1,534,201 English words! You know about 4 :)”

Is it better without the color? It might be. Let me know.

Stacking

There were a couple of items I forgot to set up for stacking earlier so now I’m swinging back to get them straight.

I changed the following items:

  • Grenade launcher Buckshot: changed from 24 to 256
  • Grenade launcher HE: changed from 12 to 256
  • Grenade launcher Smoke: changed from 12 to 256
  • Heavy Scientist Suit: changed from 1 to 256

Thanks Non-Existant for the heads up on an exploit regarding stacking.

Gathering ZLevels

I’ve been looking at the resource gathering because I’m trying to market the server better in the server list. Most servers advise what the gather multiplier is, like 3x or 5x, but the way the server was setup, it’s hard to do that.

If my math is correct, which it might not be lol, on joining, the server was almost a 3x gather rate when you’re at Level 0. As you work yourself closer to Level 50, that 3x grows slowly towards 6x. This seems a bit too close to an experimental server if you ask me. So, I set my sights on making the server a 5x server as I think that’s much more reasonable.

Here’s what I changed:

  • The initial multiplier of 2.8 was changed to 3.0
  • The percentage per level was changed from 0.75% to 0.40%

Theoretically, this means for new players they should have 3x gather rate, but over the course of 50 levels, it should be possible to get 5x gather rate.

If you find my math is wrong, please let me know :/ lol

Server Menu

It appears the menu you see as you join the server needed a bit of updating so I took a moment to do that. The hope is it’s now accurate, but also provides an improved overview of server features. Here are some snaps of what it’ll look like next time you join.

The main menu you see when joining (/ui) should now showcase a bit more of the features the server has.

The plugins tab had a few plugins we no longer used so I removed them and added a bunch more!

The sightings tab showed Trump Tower and Hillary House, but neglected to show the latest addition – The Southern Border!

Hopefully, this gives new players an understanding of the depth of features on the server and gives veteran players the ability to point unanswered questions to the menu in certain situations.

Loot Changes

I had a couple of comments on the loot so I jumped into it and tried my best to balance things out. It’s not an easy task and it’s an ongoing process so this requires constant feedback from you Bumfuzzlers.

Here’s what I changed:

  • Adjusted mine crates to have higher quality tools. Previously it had only the lower level hatchet and pickaxe.
  • Adjusted medical crates to give more medical items. It gave extremely low quantities and only 1 item.
  • Adjusted components specifically increasing gears and springs
  • Adjusted component spawning areas. Some items spawned in barrels that shouldn’t and the opposite in crates.
  • Decreased the amount of beancan grenades. They can only now be found in the better crates.
  • Removed scrap from food crate to ensure food always spawns there. Sometimes it spawns only 1 item.
  • Loot in the Elite, locked, and Underwater Advanced crates should be much better now.
  • Moved some better items like Large Furnaces out of barrels and into higher level crates.
  • The spooky Dragon Mask was added to the loot. You should find it in barrels.

Thanks for feedback Viper, Non-Existant and Kreeperlink

Color Fiasco

Facepunch changed the way text is displayed in the game and in turn they made changes to how text colors are displayed. This game used to accept red text to be coded simple as <color=red>RedText</color>, but now it has to use proper HTML like <color=#FF0000>RedText</color>. This meant, before the patch hit, I had to go through several hundred files and change every mention of color, which was typically written as red, green, blue, purpose, etc. to its hexadecimal value.

I’m just mentioning it because if I missed one, you’ll see <color=red>TheText</color> in chat instead of seeing TheText. If that happens, let me know what the text said and I’ll track it down.

Steam Workshop

Apparently, there were some changes in Rust and/or Steam as of late and this has caused some problems for various plugins. I expect it has to do with the new menu with the store integration we received in the last patch. Most likely something was changed there which borked everything else.

This means some plugins like Skinbox may not function properly or at all. I was able to fix a couple, but the changes could be far-reaching and not initially noticeable.

If you find something not to be working as expected, please let me know.

I appreciate all the feedback I received so far more notably AxelsAntagonist who went through much of the plugin list to test what was and was not working. Thanks!

Small Generator

We’ve had the small generator available for some time, but I didn’t add it because it’s a really powerful tool. After all, it’s unlimited power which can give some nice abilities.

The point was made that cave base designers can’t really take advantage of many electricity options so I finally caved.

Here’s the lowdown:

  • Unlimited power, great for caves
  • Can be found everywhere electrical components are found
  • Rarer than solar panels so slightly harder to find

This should be a great perk for everyone and it’s not something you’ll find on most servers.

Thanks for feedback Viper

Economy Wipe

I’m toying with the idea to wipe the economy at every wipe as I’m not sure if it’s fair to give some players to have such a large advantage. Starting off with a ton of RP, after you’ve found all the blueprints is maybe too much. Blueprints already give a large advantage.

To vote, join Discord and you’ll find the poll in the #polls channel. So far it’s tied!

The question for the poll is:

‘Should I wipe the economy at every wipe? I’m thinking someone starting at the 2nd wipe cycle has a disadvantage and that may not be fair’

Instacraft

Another poll on Discord is about Instacraft. We used to have instant crafting, but I modified it down to be slower because I felt it was way too easy to quickly amass a serious arsenal.

If the response strongly favors having it, I’ll likely be persuaded. Consider how it affects gameplay though. It’ll likely ensure early raids go up. Then again, so might early defenses.

The question for the poll is:

‘I believe instacraft is an important feature to have. I don’t like waiting for items to craft and think it should be immediate’

No Fuels

It turns out that the entire server was fueled up unintentionally.

Now it’s not until Level 26 (/loyalty) that players don’t require fuel for various lights and whatnot.

Thanks to AxelsAntagonist for catching it.

Flag Day Kit

Apparently, the kit for the Flag Day Monument wasn’t working. Thanks for the heads up AxelsAntagonist and for testing Non-Existant. It should be all good now.

This last patch wasn’t quite a disaster, but it certainly had its moments lol Today, I optionally patched the server which will hopefully alleviate some of the issues that have been going on, but tomorrow, Thursday 6/13, Facepunch is dropping a mandatory server and client patch. We won’t have to wipe as far as I know, but once your client is updated, you won’t be able to connect until I update the server. As long as I can keep on top of when it’s released, I’ll have it patched up in 10-15 minutes. The trick is, the patches drop whenever Facepunch feels the itch.

Have fun out there Bumfuzzlers and keep the feedback flowing!

Saints, Science, Boating

Saints, Science, Boating

I’ve got a lot of news for you Bumfuzzlers! We’ve got changes to everything from the store, scientists, home and teleport cooldowns, various fixes, ore counts, outpost and bandit camps, boat fuel perks and even an event for Saint Patrick’s Day! Read on for the whole scoop!

In-Game Store (Modtopia)

In previous weeks I removed items from the store (/s) because it was allowing you Bumfuzzlers to lounge in your lazy-boys with a beer in your hand purchasing items from the Modtopia QVC channel lol But seriously, the point was to slow raiding to some degree. I wasn’t intending to slow defense.

I’ve added CCTV Cameras and Targeting Computers to the in-game store for purchase at 200 RP each.

Thanks, Xanadu for the suggestion.

Player Challenges (Modtopia)

I’m still trying to balance the kits related to the Player Challenges (/pc) and I’ve been getting some feedback which is great. I originally nerfed them a bit since everyone jumped on the server after a wipe and rushed to get the kits which were giving rockets and all sorts of high-quality tools. This seemed to be too much of an advantage so I’ve been trying to make them valuable, but not over-powered.

I plan to make more changes, but for now, I’ve only made one change:

  • Removed the Salvage Axe from the Lumberjack challenge kit and replaced it with the Hatchet

I reviewed the other kits associated with the challenges and I’m going to let it ride the way it is right now for a little longer. I’m considering adding armor to the kits and maybe extending the cooldowns, but we’ll see. The more feedback I get from you guys the better.

Thanks, Twisted Rhythm, ATaXiA and Xanadu for the feedback.

Scientists (Modtopia)

A long time ago we had NPCs roaming the monuments, but they seemed to be a little unruly so we disabled them. Then Facepunch added the Scientists and most of the players seemed to dislike them so we disabled then. We finally ended up with Zombies and Jason roaming the countryside lol. Now, I’ve been hearing some desire to see the scientists out there again! I’m cool with that!

Now you’ll find scientists at junk piles, Military Tunnels, and the Cargo Ship. Don’t be surprised if you’re laughing at the sight of zambies attacking scientists who are being attacked by wolves lol That could happen!

Also, not sure you heard the news, but we’re going to be seeing ‘heavy’ scientists in the near future.

What do you Bumfuzzlers think of having zombies at monuments? Too much?

Thanks, ATaXiA, and others for the feedback.

Taming Animals

Apparently, there was an issue with taming animals. As you know, you can tame and ride horses, bears, chickens, etc! This is different than making them your pet (/pet) where they follow you around, acting as additional storage and even attacking other animals and players!

It appeared the command (/tame) was all Bumfuzzlered. I fixed it and now you can go ahead and ride all the boars you’d like!

Thanks to Waylander, Doge and arronmax2012 for the feedback.

Furnace Shut Off (Modtopia)

There was a bit of an annoying bug that caused furnaces to shut off. After some time, it was discovered they were turning off in the morning and then it was narrowed down to be the Night Lantern (/lantern) plugin that turns lights on at night and off in the morning. Unfortunately, it had furnaces in the list of items to turn on and off lol. Apparently, it was due to a plugin update where configuration was changed unintentionally.

Now furnaces and other sensible items are filtered out of the Night Lantern setup, so furnaces should run long and strong!

Thanks, Doge and Waylander for help narrowing that down.

Ore Counts (Modtopia)

A few of you made comments on node counts being low. After some checking, it appeared the counts were absolutely a little low for some reason.

I went ahead and raised ore node count by 30%.

Thanks, Doge for and others for the feedback.

Home Cooldowns (Modtopia)

A few of you Bumfuzzlers made mention of the cooldowns for homes (/home) being a bit high so I took a look at them.

After review I agree they were a bit on the high side so I cut them down significantly:

  • First time players: 15-minute cooldown. This was lowered by 15 minutes.
  • Legitimate Level: 15-minute cooldown. This was lowered by 10 minutes.
  • Veteran Level: 10-minute cooldown. This was lowered by 10 minutes.
  • Allegiance Level: 5-minute cooldown. This was lowered by 10 minutes.
  • VIP Level: 5-minute cooldown. This was lowered by 5 minutes.
  • Blood Level: 5-minute cooldown. This was left as is.

Thanks to Doge, arronmax2012 and Waylander for your feedback.

Teleportation Cooldowns (Modtopia)

Since I was looking at home cooldowns, I figured I’d give a look to the cooldowns related to teleporting (/tp) to people.

Basically, I made them match home cooldowns for the most part:

  • First time players:  15 min. This was left as is.
  • Level 11: 15-minute cooldown. This was raised by 3 minutes.
  • Level 19: 10-minute cooldown. This was raised by 2 minutes.
  • Level 24: 5-minute cooldown. This was left as is.
  • Level 26: 5-minute cooldown. This was raised by 2 minutes.
  • Blood Level: 5-minute cooldown. This was raised by 4 minutes.

Saint Patrick’s Pub (Modtopia)

In honor of Saint Patrick himself, the pub is back up! I won’t give you much info on it, except to say it’s in the desert, Leprechauns protect it and there are goodies and challenges for you there!

Be careful! Those Irish don’t play games during the month of March! 🙂

Plane Crash

Every once in a while you’ll see a smoking plane shoot across the sky and if you’re in the right place, and you have a smoke rocket (/craft.lockon), you’ll have the opportunity to shoot it down and get loot! I made a couple of changes to the way it works.

Here’s what I changed:

  • Increased loot by 1 crate
  • Messages no longer are shown for when it’s shot down
  • Message no longer are shown for who shot it down
  • Names of the 3 spawning NPCs will be randomized between ‘Plane Pilot’ and ‘Plane Crewman’

Dangerous Treasures (Modtopia)

The treasures event (/dt) gives some really nice loot, but the names of the NPCs that spawn have been bugging me for quite some time! So corny and randomized! Now I’ve modified it so that they’ll have a name fitting of the event.

They are now called Treasure Ghouls! 🙂 Spooky! lol

Outpost & Bandit Camps (Modtopia)

For a while now I’ve meant to tinker with the vending machines and shops at the Outpost and Bandit Camps. I wanted to make the items you can buy there to be proportional to the in-game shop (/s). Right now, you can get so many items for next to no scrap and with scrap increased on the server it’s doubly crazy!

Here are the changes I’ve made:

  • Repriced all items using the general formula
    • If blueprint exists in store (/s): (BP Cost / 2) * 2.5 = Scrap cost
    • If blueprint doesn’t exist, I based scrap cost off equivalent item cost
  • Removed resources and replaced with items
  • Removed components and replaced with items
  • Removed food/water and replaced with items
  • Removed blue key card
  • Removed scrap for sale and replaced with items

Hopefully, this should ensure the Outpost and Bandit Camp are in line with scrap amounts and the economy, but please provide me some feedback. I am considering adding some extremely valuable items there such as 2x equipment, but you’ll have to save your scrap! They won’t be cheap!

Vehicle Fuel (Modtopia)

I thought I’d give our loyal members a perk when it comes to having to fuel up their aquatic vehicles.

Now, at Level 27 and above, motor boats and RHIBs will no longer require fuel so you can “sail” the stormy seas all you like looking for ocean garbage lol

Backpacks (Modtopia)

There was an issue with backpacks preventing you from opening the backpack while in another container like a furnace or a box. That’s now been fixed.

Thanks to Doge for reporting the issue.

Powerplant Puzzle

It turns out there’s a bug in Rust regarding the Powerplant puzzle. You’ll find the second step missing a switch which makes the puzzle impossible to solve. Thanks to Doge for bringing this to my attention. I’ve run a command which is said to fix the situation, but I suspect the issue will occur at next restart. Luckily this is expected to be fixed in tomorrow’s patch.

Wipe

Don’t forget that tomorrow is a map, blueprint and economy wipe! As usual, the timeframe isn’t always the same, but I expect it to be between 3 pm and 7 pm EST. Last time it was far later than that due to Facepunch borking on the patch causing the entire community to wait a bit longer than expected. Anyhow, I’m looking forward to an awesome new wipe cycle!

As usually, you Bumfuzzlers rock. Please keep the feedback coming and I’ll continue to stay on top of things, making changes to hopefully balance the game to provide the best possible enjoyment I can! Have fun out there!

Workshop, Shock, Shopping

Workshop, Shock, Shopping

Well, it’s that time of year again Bumfuzzlers! Being naughty or nice will determine whether you get coal or goodies! Lucky for you, all Bumfuzzlers are nice! That means, no matter what, you get goodies 🙂 We’ve got a Christmas event, in-game store, economy, scientists, stacking, in-game map changes and more! Read on!

The North Pole (Modtopia)

Given the time of year, Santa’s Workshop is making a comeback! All the toys are being made up in the snow biome (not necessarily North) ready and waiting for you to get your dirty paws on them! Thing is, you’re going to have to get past the elves who guard the workshop, sneak in and get out quick before Santa wakes up!

There’s a couple things to note:

  1. The doors will automatically open at night. During the day they’re locked. If you try to activate on the door, it’ll tell you the time of day it opens.
  2. The doors will also close so if Santa wakes up while you’re inside, you’re going to be in big trouble. I’d suggest you get out quick.
  3. The boxes inside refresh loot automatically which could be hours or days. If they’re empty, someone might have been there before you or the loot just hasn’t refreshed yet.

The loot should be pretty good, but it should be even better after the next wipe when changes to the store make some items a little harder to get. Read more about that down below. Have fun! 🙂

Cheer and Fear (Modtopia)

If you’re big on the holidays, you may be interested in a collection of Christmas and Halloween items I’ve put together! You Bumfuzzlers can now buy a Christmas Cheer or a Halloween Fear kit that gives you access to foggers and Christmas lights, coffins and Christmas Trees.

It’s a great way to support the server and get some goodies in return! Run over to the store to check them out!

Christmas Shopping (Modtopia)

From the start of the last wipe, it became even more clear to me that the in-game store (/s) needs a bit of work as does the economic system. So, I’m going to be making changes come the next wipe (December 20th).

Here are the major changes:

  • Special items that give dodge, build or damage powers will be removed. You’ll have to find them out in the world which I think will be more enjoyable anyway.
  • Various raid related items like ladders will be removed. We don’t want to allow the in-game store to give too much of a jump on builders. Raiding day 2 is just silly.
  • Ammunition, especially rockets, C4, Satchels and such will be removed for the same reason as above. I’ll leave certain blueprints, but you’re going to have to craft.
  • Resources and components will be removed. Now you’ll have to get off your big fat fatty lol and smack a barrel or two instead of buying 10.000 RP of HQM to build a giant armored base on day 1. (You know who you are! lol)
  • Removed a lot of ‘actual’ items from the store. The blueprints will remain, but the actual items will be removed. You’re going to have to craft.

Here’s a list of some minor changes:

  • Hazmat Suit now gives 1 quantity
  • Santa hat now gives 1 quantity
  • Diving items were removed
  • Frog Boots now gives 1 quantity
  • Scientist Suit now gives 1 quantity
  • Pookie Bear was removed
  • Calling/Killing SuperHeli price raised slightly
  • Calling/Killing CH47 price raised slightly
  • Setting time to 9am/9pm price raised slightly

No doubt this all means balancing of loot will have to be spot on and I’m prepared to monitor it as well as I can. I’ll need feedback from you Bumfuzzlers about any difficulties you’re having with the changes.

Wipe Cycle (Modtopia)

On Modtopia, we’ve changed the wipe cycle to 2 weeks. Thank you to everyone who voted in Discord!

There may be some items I probably have to adjust due to the change (possibly kits and quests), but I think it’ll be for the better just because the 1 month cycle resulted in a low turnout the last two weeks even with the attempted idea of Wipe Kits (which has now been tried and buried so that won’t be happening again).

The point is, struggle along with me in balancing and continue to give me feedback. I’m confident it’ll come out better in the end, but it might take some time and effort.

Economics (Modtopia)

With the changes to the store and to the wipe cycle, I’ve also decided that everyone’s monetary balance needs to reset from time to time.

Right now players can save up their cash just before the wipe and then immediately spend it to get ahead of other players. That causes major issues for players without monies, but it dramatically hurts new players joining the server for the first time at the start of a wipe.

So on the 1st Thursday of every month, when we wipe blueprints, your money will return to 0. Sorry Rockefellers! 🙁

Money Barrels (Modtopia)

Earning money from breaking barrels wasn’t working for some levels (/loyalty), but it worked for others. After testing, it appears that anyone getting earnings per barrel lower than $0.51 received nothing! This meant anyone below Veteran level, even though promised, were a bunch of broke Bumfuzzlers!

To resolve this, you now get money for every 4th barrel instead of every single barrel. This way, the Native level who originally was set to earn $0.25 per barrel will now earn $1 for every 4 and it’ll work just fine. Legitimate levels who earned $0.50 now earn $2 every 4 barrels and so on.

Thanks for the feedback datWaffle21 and Skyy.
Thanks to Shining tradeit.gg for testing.

In-Game Map (Modtopia)

You’ll now be able to see the SuperHeli and the Bradley on the in-game map (press G) displayed as a red dot. You can mouse over the dot to make sure which one it is.

I have the ability now to show any items on the map so I am considering it, but I don’t want to show too much. I appreciate the whole process of discovery and adventure and while it might be useful to show cars, boats and balloons, it’s no fun when you know where everything is. I’m not even sure I like showing the SuperHeli and Bradley, but let’s give it a shot.

Item Stacking (Modtopia)

Recently, a bunch of new items were added to the game, so I had to adjust who those items stacked in inventory.

Here are a list of items that now stack:

  • “barrelcostume”: 256,
  • “cakefiveyear”: 256,
  • “clatter.helmet”: 256,
  • “electric.andswitch”: 256,
  • “electric.battery.rechargable.large”: 256,
  • “electric.battery.rechargable.small”: 256,
  • “electric.blocker”: 256,
  • “electric.cabletunnel”: 256,
  • “electric.counter”: 256,
  • “electric.doorcontroller”: 256,
  • “electric.generator.small”: 256,
  • “electric.laserdetector”: 256,
  • “electric.orswitch”: 256,
  • “electric.pressurepad”: 256,
  • “electric.simplelight”: 256,
  • “electric.solarpanel.large”: 256,
  • “electric.splitter”: 256,
  • “electric.switch”: 256,
  • “electric.timer”: 256,
  • “electric.xorswitch”: 256,
  • “electrical.branch”: 256,
  • “electrical.combiner”: 256,
  • “electrical.memorycell”: 256,
  • “habrepair”: 256,
  • “wiretool”: 256,

Thanks CannonFodder for bringing it to my attention.

Electricity (Modtopia)

With the newness of electricity, I know lots of you probably want to mess around with it. Thing is, it might take you some time to find all the pieces and then to have enough to truly experiment like you’d want to. So I figured I’d put up a package in the store that allows you to purchase all the components and then some. You get goodies, server gets supported and it’s not OP. Worst case, it allows you to better defend your base against pesky raiders.

The kit includes big items like solar panels, batteries large and small, a wind turbine, components, switches and even a generator which isn’t even in the loot rotation right now (only admins can spawn it).

At the least, you’ll have light, at the most, you’ll have experience with making traps or useful time savers like auto lights and doors.

Go check out the Electricity package in the store!

Scientists (Modtopia)

I didn’t like scientists spawning at the junk piles (and based on feedback neither did many of you), but I think it’s appropriate to have them in the Military Tunnels and on the Cargo Ship – and now they are. Hopefully this makes those coveted areas a little more challenging.

Thanks Lancelot50 for your feedback

My Corpse? (Modtopia)

I’ve been having nothing but issues with the /where command. I’ve worked with it several times and sometimes it works for me, it doesn’t for someone else, and vice versa. I’m going to work on this more in the coming weeks, but for now I just disabled it. I hope to get it, or something like it working soon.

Ore Counts (Modtopia)

For some reason ore counts reset during the last wipe which is a bit of a pain since I couldn’t remember what they were set to (lol) and it was balanced really well! I think now the ore counts are slightly higher than I’d like, but it’s better than being too low.  I’ll work at balancing them out over the next few days/weeks.

Please let me know how you feel the balance is. That’ll help me adjust the levels.

M39 Rifle (Modtopia)

Some of you have asked where you can find the new M39 Rifle so I had a closer look. It was available in the Locked Crate and Elite Crate, but now I’ve added it to the Bradley and SuperHeli loot as well. It’s considered rare, but not very rare which means it’s more rare than a pick axe, less rare than C4, and exactly as rare as a Python.

Patch Installed (Modtopia)

There was an optional patch I installed on Modtopia and Vanillatopia around 11am today with the following changes:

  • Fixed LS red card puzzle
  • Several exploit fixes
  • Clatter helm craft enabled

Christmas Update

You can expect the official Rust Christmas update to come on this Thursday, December 13th. I’ll try my best to get the server updated as soon as it drops, but as always I don’t know exactly when Facepunch will work their magic. I’m excited to see what they add this time around. I thought the Halloween update was very creative!

Thank you Bumfuzzlers for supporting the server and for all your feedback. Keep having fun out there! 🙂

Special mention to Three-Fingered Willie, Wuckfit, RaidenPeep, lookits69, and Doc for various feedback!

SuperHeli, Haunting, Midnight

SuperHeli, Haunting, Midnight

It’s Halloween season Bumfuzzlers which means we have ourselves a spooky event and some other updates! Check it out!

Haunted House (Modtopia)

Booogy booogy booogy! Mwahaa! Spooky Rust base…*ahem* I mean Haunted House complete with ghoulishness and goodies!

Inside are items, you’ll surely want, but you can’t just get in. The Haunted House is protected by a very powerful spell that makes it completely invulnerable to any mortal damage! So put away your rockets and C4! You’ll need to gain access some other way!

When the clock strikes midnight, the spirits unlock the doors to let you in so you can get your hands on the treasure inside, but you only have a short time! Don’t stay long because at 1AM, the doors lock you inside, never to escape from the after world!

There’s an assortment of goodies inside including resources and lots of skin perks to give you that extra ghoulish advantage!

The items inside will respawn every night so making your way back there wouldn’t be a bad idea, but unfortunately, you’ll have to brave the dark!

Halloween Skins (Modtopia)

Tis’ the season to sprinkle some Halloween skins into the mix of loot out there. Be on the lookout for some fun skins to brighten you and your Halloween bases! 🙂

Skin Perks (Modtopia)

I’ve added a couple new skin perks inspired by Halloween.

We’ve got the Hallows Mask, Vest and Kilt at 7% dodge each! And it’s a cool looking outfit! The mask glows in the dark!

…and the 2x damage Scarecrow AK47 with the 2x Unholy Blade gives you all you’ll need to slice those ghosts in half! You can expect these items to popup in loot here and there, but mind you, they’re rare!

SuperHeli Loot (Modtopia)

I reviewed the loot received when someone takes down the SuperHeli and I found it to be less than wonderful. So I’ve increased it!

  • Number of crates increased to 3 to 5
  • Amount of scrap increased from 60-90 to 150-450
  • Special quest (/q) items (battery, bleach, ducttape, glue, paper, research paper, sticks, camera ..) changed from 1-1 to 5-10
  • Significantly increased weapons, ammo, explosives, gun powder, etc.

Keep in mind though, I slightly increased the SuperHeli’s health and gave him a couple more rockets! Far more goodies should mean a little more challenge!

Bradley Loot (Modtopia)

The loot seemed a little weak for the Bradley as well so I figured I’d increase that too. Due to the tank being something a solo player can handle on their own, instead of the SuperHeli’s 5 crates, I’ve left it at 3. However, it will give you the same quality loot.

Admin Base Challenge (Modtopia)

I saw a couple attempts at the admin base and I can see where I need to make some updates to it! No one has gotten anywhere near all of the loot, but there was some great progress. Sometime soon I’ll tear it down, update it with corrections and refurbish 🙂

Please enjoy and send me feedback if you have it! I’m always interested in hearing what you Bumfuzzlers have to say and it’s extremely valuable.

Buried Loot, Discordomics, Guilt

Buried Loot, Discordomics, Guilt

Have I got an update for you Bumfuzzlers! 🙂 This one has a lot in it, so take your time, get some raw chicken, toss it on the grill and relax with your pookie bear! 🙂 We’ve got a bunch of fixes, new ways to earn money, buried treasure hunts, Discord integration and more! All of these changes apply to Modtopia unless otherwise stated. Read on!

Chat Bot

I view the chat logs as often as I can to understand what is confusing to players and/or what they have questions with and I also take note of questions I receive in other ways. As more explanation can never hurt, I made a couple modifications to the plugin list on the website and also expanded the bot a bit more.

To add additional help for players who may be unsure about commands or simply forget them, I did the following:

  1. I’ve added keywords that can be used with the exclamation point (!) to give you information on commands.

For example: !wipe, !trump, !hillary, !car, !trade, !horse, !kit, !home, !tp, !teleport, !ao, !offline, !bgrade, !mute, !clan, !friend, !map, !minimap, !pc, !challenge, !loyalty, !points, !prestige, !help, !admin and so on. I still have lots of add, but this is a start.

  1. You can ask the bot questions in plain English.

For example: How does radiation work? How do I use the map? How do I add members to my clan? How can I make a player shut up? How does offline protection work? How do I tp? How do I create a home? How do I create a terminal? How do I place a camera? How do I buy items? What can I spend money on?

Variations of these should work, but as I tweak it, the bot should become more fluid and answer more and more questions.  I would suggest using the word ‘how’ and then a keyword in your sentence. For instance, How do I delete home?, How do I create a home? and How do I set a home?

Your Dead Body

Apparently /where wasn’t working. I switched plugins and it works now. This one shows the grid and the distance so you can return to the scene of the crime and witness the silliness that most likely had occurred. Thanks for feedback Ron Swanson, ATaXiA, MrNiceGuy, isueIt and others.

Treasure Event

I had reports that the grid for the treasure chest event was not reported correctly both when typing /dtd or in the chat message provided when the event started. That should be sorted now and the grid should be reported properly so you can find the goodies! Thanks for feedback ATaXiA.

RustNET

Previously, accessing /rustnet would not give you much information on what you needed to do and it’s been a peeve of mine for some time. I just hadn’t gotten around to it. I’ve done some modification to give you some instructions on how to get started. Accessing /rustnet will advise you on how to create a terminal and get a terminal ID. Once you setup a terminal and access it to get the terminal ID,  you will see additional help. This one applies to Vanillatopia as well. Thanks isueIt for reporting the need.

Remote Turrets

The ability to link Remote Turrets to RustNET terminals was problematic in that it simply didn’t work! When typing the /rt command, nothing would happen. Now this is fixed so you can take control over your turrets to mow down those pesky chickens! 🙂 Thanks for feedback isueIt.

Auto Searchlights

There was a very strange issue that would come after taking control of a remote searchlight through a RustNET terminal. After disconnecting from the remote searchlight, everything would seem normal, but you couldn’t build and sometimes you could even experience random damage as if you were being burned or stuck on a barbed barricade! This wouldn’t affect anyone but you so the rest of the server would be fine. Restarting the server is the only thing that would fix the issue.

It turns out this seems to be a conflict with the Proximity Alert plugin – the plugin that allows you to be alerted about the presence of another player or NPC within a given distance. For now, since the /prox plugin has some issues, I’ve disabled it. I’ll look into it’s issues in the future, but I can’t promise anything 🙁 Thanks for feedback on this problem isueIt.

Raid Guilt

It’s been tame for a while. I’d like to see a little more raiding going on and it seems a few of you would also. A semi-problem is lots of you regular Bumfuzzlers are friendly with each other and are hesitant to raid one another. That must stop! Jk 🙂 Fine, be friends! That’s great! I’ll just remove the guilt from raiding!

From now on, I’m going to make it more difficult for you to know whose bases are whose. This way when you raid someone, you can’t really feel guilty since you didn’t know it was your friend’s base! When your friend screams they were raided, just tell them you didn’t know! or show genuine concern and vow to track down the person who did it! Revel in the excitement of barging into some unknown person’s house only to find your friend sleeping by the fireplace! Doh!

What does this mean? It means /prod was short lived and the raid notes you see in chat when someone is raiding are going away! I want to add back some of the mystery and secrecy about raiding and being able to see base ownership doesn’t allow for that.

Raid! Be free! Be careless! No worries about hurting feelings! 🙂 You didn’t know who’s base it was! 😉 It wasn’t your fault!

Kits

It turns out after the wipe, I missed resetting kit usage so if you used a kit toward the end of the previous wipe, you may not have been able to use it this wipe due to the cooldown. I’ve gone ahead and reset the kits so this should no longer be the issue. Some of you may get a free kit use, enjoy! Thanks to WRecKLeSS for the heads up!

As I posted last, I removed any of the kits from the website store that might be considered pay to win. It turns out I forgot to remove those kits from /kit in-game. Thanks to isueIt for pointing that out. I’ve now removed those kits.

Discordomics

We have a new Discord event which will provide players with the chance to claim dollars towards their economic balance! The event runs at a random times (usually within the hour) and also provides a random amount of money each time. When it runs, you’ll see messages similar to the messages below.

Here’s what you see in Rust:

Here’s what you see in Discord:

In the example, you would copy the text /get <code> and then paste it into the chat in game. In this case, by using the command posted in Discord, players would receive 157 dollars in currency! Just hang out in Discord and rake in the dough! Just keep in mind only the first 3 players get the reward so you have to hurry!

The link for Discord is always on the right at the front page, but here it is for convenience – https://discord.gg/37uNKRX

Since I enabled it yesterday isueIt is raking in the cash! I see him in Discord grabbing every cent! 🙂 Best to be quick!

Discord Communication

In keeping with the idea of expanding Discord functionality, I’ve implemented the ability for players to communicate with Discord from inside the game. This can be extremely helpful because wherever I am, I get messages on my phone via the Discord app. This means if you need to get in touch with me, you can do use Discord itself or you can be lazy and do it from chat in Rust. Obviously consider I do work so my response time can vary, but at least I’ll know about it at some point – sometimes Steam has  away of losing messages.

So what can you do? Two major things:

  • /report (player) (message) – Reports a player to Discord, tracks their number of reports.
  • /message (message) – Sends message to Discord.

I’ve given everyone access to these commands and as long as it’s not abused, it’ll stay that way. I urge you to use them in order to communicate with me (and Discord).

Buried Treasure

This one should be a lot of fun! Find treasure maps that lead to treasure and gold coins you can cash in for dollars! The treasures can be on land or under water!

When you find a map, simply set it as the active item in your tool belt, type /markmap or right-click (the later seems a little buggy at the moment). The map will be removed from your inventory, you’ll get a message about the grid location in chat where you can find your buried treasure, and the default Rust map (key ‘G’) shows an explosion icon in the specified grid only the map wielding player can see.

Once you get within 5 meters or so, you’ll get an announcement that the loot is nearby and the explosion map icon will be removed. Now you can open loot and take the booty! You may gain new maps from the treasure or even get gold coins!

If you receive gold coins, simply set them as the active item, type /sellgold or right-click (again the later seems buggy right now). You will automatically gain dollars towards your economic balance that you can use in the store.

TIP: DO NOT THROW MAPS OR GOLD COINS ON GROUND! You cannot pick them back up. You can however loot them and store them, give them to others just fine.

Also, note that maps come in 4 rarity flavors as you can see in the picture below.

Rarity Levels:

  • Tan – spawns a basic crates
  • Green – spawns an uncommon crate
  • Blue – spawns a rare crate
  • Purple – spawns an elite crate

Maps will spawn throughout the world in crates and boxes!

If you have any trouble remembering any of this in game, you can type /treasurehelp or !buried or “How does buried treasure work?”, etc.

Next Wipe

Modtopia will be wiping on Thursday 5/24, but Vanillatopia will get a pass until 6/7. I want to see how things go this next cycle, but there’s a chance I may do two things:

  • remove decay or lessen it signifantly
  • remove offline protection or lessen it signifantly

Let’s see how these recent changes go first.

Phew! I think for right now that’s all I’m going to say 🙂 I hope you Bumfuzzlers have fun and please as always please provide me with feedback. You can catch me in Steam, Discord or our forums!

Early Access, Boss, Flips

Early Access, Boss, Flips

Big things going on with Rust and the server! I’ve got some updates on quarries, cars, plane crashing, the superheli and Rust leaving early access! Check this out for what you Bumfuzzlers need to know including a Valentine’s Day event preview!

Boss of Hearts

Well, Valentine’s Day is coming up and the server wants you to be its valentine 🙂 I’ve placed a February preview on one of the islands, but be careful. It’s called the Heart house and it’s home to the Boss of Hearts! She’s a little more of a brute than the other NPCs on the server. Get close enough to the Heart House and you’ll get yourself a hearty (get it? lol) kit haha Go at it and have some fun. I’ll be working on it a little more as I have time!

SuperHeli <3

I made a few small changes to the helicopter refuel event as it appeared to be somewhat easy for players. All you had to do was kill a few easy NPCs and then the SuperHeli sat there like a sitting duck waiting to be destroyed. I’ve made the following changes:

  • Max time it will decide to refuel was lowed to 500 from 600
  • Min time it will decide to refuel was lowered to 200 from 300
  • Time to refuel is now 120 lowered from 180
  • NPC Spawn Radius is now 5m instead of 4m

Hopefully it will give people less time to take out the NPCs and the SuperHeli which will make it slightly more challenging. I was going to enable the guns on it while refueling, but after testing it was too over powered. Thanks to Orion for his feedback and testing on the event.

Also, after speaking with the plugin author of HeliControl, it appears that the reason sometimes it appears the SuperHeli spawns so often is due to the fact that it spawns based on a timer and that timer doesn’t use the death of the last SuperHeli to determine the next spawn.

This means if the Superheli spawned at 4pm and is set to spawn every two hours and the pilot ejection event happens 4:20pm and then the refuel event happens at 4:59pm, the SuperHeli may still spawn at 5pm as it isn’t aware of the other events. The plugin author is going to detect the time of the last SuperHeli death and change the spawning to work based on that last death. I can’t promise when that will happen. In turn, expect sometimes the SuperHeli may haunt you.

Quarry Loot Fix

I believed the Quarries were set to output 5 times the normal amount, but the setting I used actually meant that it would spit out 5 of whatever item every 30-60 seconds. This made for some very slow earnings. I’ve now changed it so it’s 5 times that. Thanks to Jarl Balgruuf for noticing the slow trickle of resources.

Plane Crash off Center

There’s been a few times where the low-flying plane would crash into the mountains and this seemed mostly due to it flying over the very center of the map each time it spawned. A few of you asked to have it more varied in its flight path too. Now there’s a fix to ensure the plane doesn’t spawn over the center of the map each time like it once did. Hopefully this gives more players a chance at it.

Flippin’ Cars

The vehicles have had a bunch of issues, but most glaringly is the fact that sometimes you can get stuck and screwed up if the car flips upside down! Well now, it will automatically eject players from the car when it goes upside down and there’s now a command (/flipcar) that you can use to flip an upside down car over!

Rust Leaving Early Access

It’s hard to believe it, but Facepunch has finally declared on February 8th they will be leaving early access, but what does this mean to you? There’s surely some things that will change. They suggest one of them won’t be staff dedicated to the game and cite the reasons for making the change that they finally can say for sure they know where they are going with the game lol Sure took them long enough to do that! Two main things stand out to me as major changes:

  • Game updates will be changed to once per month instead of once per week
  • The game price will increase from $19.99 to $34.99

Surely this will save time for server admin like me as I can say updating the server every week can be challenging. For you Bumfuzzlers, you should have a more stable game with more meaningful patches each month. At least, that’s my expectation 🙂 I could be wrong.

Thank you for all your support as usual. You guy and gals rock!

Santa, Christmas, Night

Santa, Christmas, Night

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house. Not a creature was stirring, not even a Bumfuzzler! Indeed, Christmas time is upon us which means goodies from good ol’ Saint Nick for all you good (and bad lol) Bumfuzzler boys and girls! And where does Santa make the toys you ask?? At the North Pole in the Snow Biome! Where else?

Inside the Santa’s secret workshop in the North Pole are many, many boxes filled with everything from small goodies like resources to large goodies like Perks and boom booms! Even the many stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that Santa and elves would be asleep without care!

The trick to the North Pole is that the doors and boxes are magical! The doors won’t open for explosives and they won’t open with a code or a key! They only open at night when the elves are sleeping! The boxes in the North Pole will not always have items in them because they’re magical as well! Today one box may be empty, but in an hour, the next day or a week later, it will have some of the most sought after goodliness on Bumfuzzler Modtopia! Just as the Clause’s were nestled all snug in their beds with visions of sugar-plums dancing in their heads, you show up to take their loot!

Be careful though! The doors automatically open at night, but they automatically close during the day. If you don’t get in and out quick, you may get locked in with the elves and they aren’t very friendly to people trying to steal their hard work! Then again, maybe the elves aren’t what you should be worried about. Others are bound to want that loot as well 😉

Good luck Bumfuzzler! “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

(Happy Thanksgiving to all of my American brothers and sister Bumfuzzlers! May you have an amazing day of food, family and gratitude for all the special things in your life!)
