What’s up Bumfuzzlers?! The last couple weeks I’ve been trying to find some time to get back to tweaking! After changing to a 1 month wipe and resetting the loot tables, there’s a lot I still had to do. Thing is, my schedule has been rather hectic so it’s been delaying me. Rest assured I am getting your feedback! Here’s just a few tweaks I’ve made over the weekend.

Loot (Modtopia)

I’ve done a bunch, focusing on barrels and availability of certain items. There’s no doubt I have a lot to go, but I’m going to let these changes settle in, get feedback and then continue. I’m trying to adjust things cautiously and carefully because, with the longer wipe cycle, I’m trying to create a little grind, but not grind-age.

  • Adjusted the rarity of key cards. Both green and blue are now common, but red is uncommon and slightly harder to find.
  • Fuses were adjusted from rare to uncommon. Right now there’s 16 in the world. They will vary slightly from that count.
  • Mining Quarries can now be found in loot as rare
  • Survey Charges will now be found in loot as rare
  • Also the following items were added to the loot table that were previously unavailable:
    • Hammer (Common)
    • Pickle (Common)
    • Bone Arrow (Uncommon)
    • Small Battery (Uncommon)
    • Blood (Uncommon)
    • Angry JackoLantern (Uncommon)

Hordes (Modtopia)

I’ve made a couple changes to Zambies to make them a little more interesting in terms of loot, but also to help avoid the constant cat and mouse chase that goes on when you hear them grunting.

  • I’ve increased the horde count by 2 for a total of 12 hordes
  • I’ve modified the number of zambies in each horde to start at 1 instead of 4. This should mean you’ll encounter smaller groups.
  • I’ve left the max zambie count in the hordes to 15 so they will still grow over time.
  • Zambies now drop additional items that can be used for quests (/q)
    • Small Battery
    • Blood
    • Paper
    • Pookie Bear
    • Research Paper
    • Glue
    • Sticks
    • Duct Tape
    • Camera
    • Bleach

Keep in mind the quests (/q) for these items, when completed, will give you Skin Perk items. For instance, increased dodge, harvest, damage and building abilities!

I’ve added more blueprints to barrels to make it easier to get crafting. I still have to add a few more and review boxes and crates.

Grilling (Modtopia)

There was a weird bug with the grill where phantom versions of meat and wood would pop out of the grill when the cooking was done. I tracked this down to a plugin that seems to have screwed the pooch and now you the BBQ ghosts are gone!

Jason Voorhees (Modtopia)

Our long-time resident horror movie terror was MIA. For some reason he stopped roaming the countryside! He’s now back and ready to machete so be careful. He packs some hefty health and is very stealthy.

Prestige (Modtopia)

For some reason it seemed notifications were being doubled which can be somewhat annoying. I think I’ve resolved that now. Thanks Hazmad for the feedback.

Also, in an early version of Prestige it was set to play an explosion when earning a new level. That’s been disabled, but I must have rolled back the version on that so it became enabled again. I’ve disabled it again so you don’t think you walked over a landmine! Thanks Twisted Rhythm for the feedback.

Kits (Modtopia)

Changing to a 1 month wipe means having to adjust a lot of other things – like kits. They were still setup as if we had a 1 week wipe cycle. Here are the changes I’ve made:

  • Signal Nachos kit: 4 hour cooldown, 3 usage max –> 3 day cooldown and 9 times max
  • Trump Wall Builder: 24 hour cooldown and 3 usage max –> 3 day cooldown and 9 times max
  • Trump Border Wall: 24 hour cooldown and 3 usage max –> 3 day cooldown and 9 times max
  • Hillary Jail Break: 24 hour cooldown and 3 usage max –> 3 day cooldown and 9 times max
  • Hillary E-mail Server: 24 hour cooldown and 3 usage max –> 3 day cooldown and 9 times max
  • Subscriber: 1 usage max –> 2 day cooldown and 3 times max
  • VIP M249: unlimited –> 2 times max

Death (Modtopia)

There are two plugins that help you find your body when you die. Both of them were having issues. For instance, you might have been seeing a message like this when you die: “Your corpse was last seen 1378 meters from here, in the unknown”

Obviously this isn’t very helpful. Now it will identify your body’s grid number to make it easier. The other plugin is meant to highlight your body on the G map, but it’s not working. I’ll work on that. For now I’ve just disabled it.

Restarts (Modtopia)

Recently the server has crashed twice unexpectedly. I’m looking into locating the cause. In the meantime I’ve set the server to restart 2 times per day. No worries, you’ll get 30 minutes warning with a nice countdown and the server will be back up usually within 5 minutes.

Expect the server to restart at 12pm and 12am EST. Hopefully this doesn’t cause the map and other graphical items not to work, but if it does please Steam me so I know and then I’ll fix it. That’s part of the reason I haven’t had automated starts.

Meanwhile I’ve set the map to save every 5 minutes instead of 10 so that if it does crash, the rollback won’t be quite as severe.

Plugins (Modtopia)

With the two server crashes I decided to disable some plugins that I don’t think are used much in an effort to see if the issue is related to any of them. A couple of them simply aren’t even working anyway so I figure I can disable them now to see if they’re issues.

I disabled the following (and a few more you wouldn’t know about):

  • Barrel Points
  • Blood Trail
  • Cupboard Messages
  • Death Marker
  • Decay Notifications
  • Easy Vote Highest Voter
  • Flare Gun
  • Proximity Scanners
  • Rafts
  • Target Practice
  • Survey Info
  • Viking Boat
  • Visual Cupboard

If you are heartbroken that any of these are disabled, please let me know and I’ll make it an effort to enable it again.

Performance (Modtopia)

I just received an answer from my server provider and they said the server had hit the memory limit which is why it crashed. They’ve extended that limit so I’m hoping things will get better. Please let me know if the server crashes in case I miss it.

Population

Although the server provider increased the memory which is likely running down due to the various memory leaks Rust has, I do hear players talking about higher than normal client crashes so I decided to tinker with the population limits which I set relatively higher a while back. It could very well be that the extra entities in the world are causing clients to hold on to more things in memory and then…kablooey.

So I reset the limits back to defaults. This means some items might be harder to find. For instance, bears were at a max of 27 and now they’re 18. Ore and trees also had higher limits. Additionally, the tickrate (the rate at which items respawned – not necessarily in the same place) was 60, but now I raised it to 90 (the default is 120)

Let’s see how it goes.

Thanks everyone for your patience while I reconfigure things. With your feedback, I’m confident the server will be better than it was before the loot table was reset. Again, the hope is to give the server back a bit of that survival feeling while still maintaining that modded server feel. Stick with me and we’ll get it to that point for what I hope is a great balance.

Garbage, Deathmark, Challenge

Garbage, Deathmark, Challenge

For both Modtopia and Vanillatopia we had wipes last week! Along with that I have some updates and additions for you Bumfuzzlers to nibble on! Here’s a run down of what’s going on with the servers.

Raid Sympathy (Modtopia)

For those who don’t know, Raid Sympathy, is a custom plugin for Modtopia that gives people who were raidedd back a portion of the resources for destroyed items!

An issue was found where incorrect messages were being sent to players acting as if they were raided and had items to claim, but there were no items. That…was…a…bug! lol Now it’s fixed! Now you’ll only get messages if you were actually raided because we are boohooing with you and want to make you feel better 🙂

For some reason I don’t have notes on who reported that to me, but thank you!!

In-Game Store (Modtopia)

There were so many store icons that were missing. Most of them were related to the Skin Perks for some reason. I think originally the plugin would go out to the Steam workshop and get them, but then stopped? I dunno. Either way, I painfully made the images and uploaded them to my host, linked them and vwalaha! You have nice images to gander at!

Pickaxe Axe? (Modtopia)

For some reason (probably my mistake) there was a Stone Pickaxe that would spawn out in the world from time to time, with the skin of an axe! But it wasn’t an axe! It was a Stone Pickaxe! This caused some confusion since hitting a tree would cause the supposed axe to be destroyed in a matter of minutes.

I’ve since fixed this and now the Stone PickAxe will look and act like a Stone Pickaxe! Thanks soundklown for catching this!

NPC Challenge (Modtopia)

We’ve had a kit for the NPC Kill challenge (/pc) for some time, but unfortunately, there was no way to get it because it wasn’t working. Now when you type /pc, you’ll see it there and whoever kills the most zambies, gets the kit!

DeathMarker (Modtopia)

I’ve added a new plugin to the mix that will hopefully be easier to use than the /where command when you need to find your Bumfuzzlered corpse. Now all you have to do is launch your map using G and look for the yellow dot. There lies your mutilated body!

For some reason it doesn’t say ‘You died here’ like the picture above. I’ll try to figure out why at some point. For now just look for the yellow dot. It should stand out.

Rust Performance

A few of you have been having issues with Rust and it appears everyone is, but people with more monstrous computers are typically immune to them since their hardware can absorb it a bit better. It appears the issue has to do with GC or Garbage Collection.

Rust loads items into memory and really should release those items from memory at some point when they’re unneeded. Unfortunately Rust is like a clingy x-girlfriend who never lets go. This causes your computer to be overloaded with ‘Garbage’ until it chokes because it has no more memory available. Chances are at that point you’ll be kicked.

Fear not! There are a few things you can do to help the issue.

  • Press F8 to monitor your memory usage
    • Take note what the memory is at when you crash or get kicked

Go into the console (F1) and do the following:

  • Bind the global.free console command to a key by simply typing bind ‘key’ global.free
    • Just replace ‘key’ with the key of your choice like k or j or l
    • Use this new key to free up garbage before the memory gets to the level where you get kicked
    • Note that when you using global.free stuttering will occur so don’t do it during a squabble with a chicken.

Zambie Increase (Modtopia)

A little birdy told me they couldn’t find zambies so I increased them ever so slightly. Now they will spawn in groups of 4 instead of 3, but the groups won’t grow every 30 seconds. Instead they’ll grow every 60. I’m thinking this might cut down any performance issues they could cause.

Heya Bumfuzzlers! I’ve got a bunch of balancing going on this week so bare with me while I try my best to get it right 🙂 We’ve got kit changes, zambie curbing, metabolism, magazine boosting and some awesome buys added to the in-game store! Let’s get cracking 🙂

Zambie Hordes (Modtopia)

There were zambies everywhere! I love em, but unfortunately I think it was lagging the server a little. Because of that, I’ve reduced the zambies to 40 hordes which start of in groups of 3 and grow to 10. Again, you will see zambie hordes join forces when they come in contact with each other so beware! You never know when a giant group will hit!

Metabolism (Modtopia)

For a while I was toying with metabolism, but as of the last patch it seems people were starving way too quickly. I was using it to try and mimic what real thirst and hunger would be like and it worked, but as with many things in Rust, and certainly in modded Rust, things don’t necessarily keep working 🙁

I’ve disabled it for the time being. I’m not sure it’ll make a comeback 🙁

Base Recycler

I’ve lowered the crafting requirements for the recycler (/rec) a bit to make it easier to craft.

  • Scrap 250 > 225
  • Gears 15 > 10
  • Metal Springs 15 > 10

Just type /rec after reaching level 18 (/loyalty) or find one out there in a box. There’s a 14% chance you’ll find one!

Subscriber Kit (Modtopia)

For a while now, I’ve been dissatisfied with the subscriber kit contents. I love that Bumfuzzlers subscribe to the site and our Steam group to get it, but it’s simply over-powered with players getting C4 and rockets immediately at a wipe start.

Now the subscriber kit gives players 5 supply signals and it can be used 1 time per wipe. It’s not C4, but it will still give you a leg up at the start of a wipe and it’s somewhat random.

For now I’ve left the standard supply signal kit intact and you can still /vote to receive more supply signals. However, I may be removing that supply signal kit in the coming weeks. If you haven’t already, subscribe so you can keep up on Bumfuzzler happenings!

Challenge Kits (Modtopia)

Similar to the subscriber kit, I’ve believed some of the challenge kits (/pc) are a bit over-powered for some time. I’ve tweaked almost every one of them with some getting more items and others getting less. It’ll still pay to be on top of those leader-boards for sure!

Magazine Boosting (Modtopia)

VIPs have had the power of the clip and it’s a great ability, but it’s time to tweak it a little. Having a 3x clip size over the other players on the server is a bit over-powered and I should have changed this earlier. For now, I’ve reduced its power to 2x. It’s still strong, but as you’ll see next, I think this will balance out.

In-Game Store (Modtopia)

Now any player can purchase the Magazine Boost and the Life Stealer ability from the store (/s). Up until now, VIPs were the only players who have had access to these abilities, but now anyone can have them. Magazine Boost is as I mentioned before. It gives you 2x the normal clip size for all weapons. Life Stealer, gives you the ability to fill your health when damaging other players.

If you think about it, PVP already awards the player with the most hits on the other. Life Stealer just gives players who land hits that much more of an advantage. Seems like the first few shots will make a major difference in the battle.

Given that reaching VIP requires a bit of loyalty (/loyalty), this should be a big seller. Both items will require 15 Reward Points which is not cheap, but you know it’s worth it! Start saving! 🙂

Fish Galore

Hey fisherman, I just updated the fishing mod which should now be more streamlined with easier commands and such.

To fish, head off and find some water. You need to be within a few meters or even standing in it. Take your Spear and jab the water floor and haul in a fish. You can also use your Bow or Crossbow to get near the water and shoot at it!

You can also use a fishing pole! While holding a spear, type /makepole to make a fishing pole, then when looking at water, type /castpole. A bobber will appear out in water and a countdown bar will appear onscreen. When the bar disappears, you will either catch something or not!

Bonuses are granted depending on time of day, quality of weapon, what you wear and have on you. By default, there is a very small chance to random loot crates as well!

Performance (Vanillatopia)

Over the last week or so, I’ve been having issues with performance on Vanillatopia. I’m working with my host to get it squared away. There were a couple of times it restarted without warning and then afterwards, the plugins wouldn’t load. I just reinstalled some things and the host took at a look at it. I’m hoping the issues will subside, but let me know!

Awesome things abound Bumfuzzlers! I’m really excited about a couple of things, but wait until  you hear about the horde! Also, we have key changes to the store, NPCs, performance and decay, based on your feedback! Let’s take a look at what’s what! All the following changes are for Modtopia.

Water Jugs

Turns out stacking water jugs can screw with the quantities inside them so I turned off stacking with them.

Now you can only put one water jug in a slot, but they won’t be accidentally emptied when an empty one is s stacked on top a full one. Thanks JackHillKing for the feedback!

Discordomics

I’ve been tweaking the Discord Economic event – where paying attention in Discord can win you big money – and I’m sure I’ll tweak it a bit more over time to create the proper balance. It’s fairly easy to get lots of money if you participate so there’s a danger of some people joining the top 1% somewhat rapidly lol

I’ve changed the values just a little bit:

  • Event occurs between 30-90 min instead of 40-120
  • Rewarded money was changed from $20-$80 to $15-$70

You’d be wise to pay attention to the Discord! You can get rich quick!

Decay

I did some testing with decay and I determined it was a little high. Building a reasonable sized base would result in being made a housewife for the entire wipe, filling the cupboard all day with resources. I’ve gone ahead and cut the required upkeep in half so it’s not so much of a burden.

This will hopefully result in more of you getting outside for some well needed Vitamin D. Thanks MrNiceGuy for your feedback and persistence!

Auto CodeLock

VIPs have had the ability to automatically place a code lock when placing doors, boxes, cupboards, lockers, etc. even when they didn’t have one in inventory. I’ve gone ahead and disabled that. Now VIPs will require a code lock in their inventory just like everyone else.

I’ll consider adding this back, but it seems it’s too easy to place doors for the code locks and then recycle them for free resources. I don’t believe players are doing this, but it easily could be and that’s not good.

Monument NPCs

The bots stationed at monuments should now parachute in! It looks really nice and makes more sense instead of having them simply appear out of thin air. Should be very cool to see when watching monuments like the rocket area since there are lots of NPCs there. All we need now is a plane!

Also, typically, when killing an NPC, the name of the bot would give your location away. For instance, if you were seen killing Trainyard Security, someone would know you were at the Trainyard. Now, the bot names are completely ambiguous so when someone sees you killing a bot in chat, they won’t know where you are. You can expect silly names like Joe Soldier, Guardsman Jones, Private Paul, Sergeant Stephen, Boxer Jones, Charlie, George, Jimmy, Agent Anderson, Stacy Glasses, Sammy Study, Michael Gasmask and so on. I am considering a themed name change, but let’s see how it goes.

Lastly, NPCs would shoot from quite a bit away. In fact, up to 120 meters. I was finally able to change this and now they’ll shoot at you from up to 75 meters. This should be realistic, but hopefully somewhat inaccurate. I’ll continue to adjust it as needed.

In-Game Store

As the dust settles on the store, I noticed some issues with various items there. Here’s a few of the things I changed:

  • Skin Perk Pickaxes are now sold 1 per purchase instead of 3
  • Removed buying 3 Salvaged Axes. Now you can only buy the Blueprint
  • I renamed the Salvaged Icepick, Hammer and Axe so interface is more organized
  • Changed values of all salvaged items to be more aligned
  • Lowered count and cost of Satchel Charges
  • Lowered Small Stocking quantity to 1 from 3
  • Lowered Super Stocking quantity to 1 from 3
  • Raised Super Stocking cost to 3
  • Added 4x Scope for purchase
  • Raised all ammunition 1 Reward Point

There’s a lot of balancing here yet to do, so please give me feedback!

Zombie Horde

I’ve just added a feature that I think is awesome and I think you’ll agree! Now, groups of zombies will spawn across the world. They’ll start out as smaller groups, but over time, they’ll grow! They don’t like to be attacked and will slaughter anything in their way! Now you have something to be afraid of! Not just Jason 🙂

Here’s how the horde works:

  • When a horde is destroyed, a new one will be created 5 minutes later
  • A new horde will contain 7 zombies
  • Hordes will grow up to sizes of up to 25 zombies
  • The world will contain 3 hordes
  • Hordes randomly spawn
  • A new zombie is added to the horde every 10 minutes
  • When the horde kills a player or NPC, a new zombie is added to the horde
  • You must put 100 meters between you and the horde for them to lose interest
  • Hordes will merge together if they meet

Unlike Jason, they have no health or damage changes and for the most part, they only have melee weapons.

Server Performance

Performance issues with the server are rare, but after doing some math it appears some work was needed. With NPCs and this new zombie feature, we are effectively adding to the player count so each NPCs uses near the equivalent of a slot. With that, I decided to up the server from 50 to 100 players to compensate. Hopefully any lag that existed before, even infrequently, is gone. I’ve already heard positive feedback about the change.

Mind you, this is doubling the cost of the server and changes like the Zombie Horde also cost money. Any donation, no matter how small (can donate $1!) is always appreciated.

I’ve re-enabled the Warp Master package which gives you more teleports, homes and teleporting abilities. With this you can teleport directly to grid coordinates and you can also use /tpb which teleports you back to where you teleported from. Very nice tools for Bumfuzzlers and only a couple bucks! This way you’ll get something for your support!

Fishing Improvements

In the past, all you could do was poke the water with a spear to get yourself a fish dinner, but I enabled a new feature with fishing that might be fun when you’re on your boat!

  • Start off with either a wooden or stone spear (stone gets better results)
  • With the spear selected, type /makefishingpole
  • Now that you have the fishing pole, go out to the water and type /castfishingpole

Keep in mind that there are a couple of criteria that add to your catch percentage:

  • Your attire is 10%
  • Your Items are 10%
  • The Time of Day is 10%
  • Your fishing pole or spear is 10%

For instance, I believe your catch percentage is less if you’re naked, have no inventory and your’e fishing at night with a wooden spear. If you want to know your chances just type /fishchance.

Also note that there’s a 10% chance you’ll get a random item!

Wipe Upcoming

On Thursday we’re going to have a map and blueprint wipe so get ready! I’m anticipating lots of new Rust goodies from Facepunch as well so it should be interesting!

Thanksgiving is no exception Bumfuzzlers! The patches must flow and flow they have 🙂

That post image is from the upcoming monument called The Junkyard. It looks pretty awesome and a great idea. Seems like it would be fun to explore for sure. Here’s a few more pictures of it.

Also more talk about half walls as part of Building 3.0. This should make for some far more dynamic buildings.

Take a look at the adjustments made to the tree mini game. They made it a little more manageable. No longer will you have to play ring around the rosy with the tree! lol

Admire animations seem to be coming along! This will go nicely with the latest Skin Perk addition to the server. Now not only will you get perks from certain variations of items based on skin, but you can also admire them!

Trees, Perform, Sound

Alright you Bumfuzzlers! It’s the one of the two wipiest times of the month – the second Thursday of the month – so the world is reborn and loot is for the taking. I originally wasn’t planning on wiping blueprints, but I figured, since I wasn’t even sure if I had the right way to do it, I should try it this wipe. Normally we’ll be doing it once per month on the first Thursday of the month.

To me the biggest update has to do with trees as there’s now a mini game the true. However the falling aspect of the tree we’ve had for a while here at BumfuzzlerModtopia. The big difference is now we’ll have better effects, trees can be knocked down by explosions and no one will get kicked for fly hacking when standing on top of the tree! 🙂
