Whew! This last week has been rough! The patch and my host have been giving us all agita! Unfortunately, much of the graphical parts of the server have been having issues and in many cases I’m hamstrung by my host who has been dragging their arses on the issue that is clearly theirs. At the same time, hey, it’s Rust. We keep moving Bumfuzzlers! We fight through the stupid issues and keep it going. Aside from the various issues, I did make some changes to the server that should improve gameplay so let’s talk!

AI Changes

I get lots of complaints that NPCs shoot through rocks across 100’s of meters and so on. This isn’t anything I can fix as it’s a Facepunch issue left over from the days where animals ran through rocks. Who knows when they’ll fix it.

  • I’ve disabled the monument NPCs for now.
  • I’ve increased the zambie horde quite a bit. Now, there is a max of 50 zambie hordes, each starting with 3 zambies each. They have the ability to grow up to 10 zambies per horde.
  • I’ve disabled the blue scientists. I personally found them annoying and mostly useless. They don’t offer much challenge, they’re all over the place and they’re predictable. You know they’re at certain monuments and at junk piles, etc. I’d rather have a much more dynamic situation.

There’s one thing I’m concerned about that you’ll have to give me feedback about. The zambies are set to kill animals right now. I have it that way because it seems more realistic, but I fear this will create fisherman out of all of you lol If they kill too many animals, there won’t be much animal meat, fat or leather around. This could cause issues.

Also, in the future, if the zambies work well, I may still enable a few NPCs here and there who don’t ‘belong’ anywhere, but simply wander around. Chances are however, because I’ve configured NPCs to shoot at zambies and vice versa, they’ll be killed by zambies due to sheer numbers, but it may create a more interesting environment.

Recyler

As you know a few weeks back I changed the /rec command to allow you to craft a recycler instead of being able to use a virtual recycler. This is only available for players who have reached level 18 – 3,500 loyalty points – (/loyalty). So that some players, at lower levels might get lucky, I’ve put the recycler into the loot tables so everyone has a 14% chance of finding a recycler in boxes. It’s certainly nice to have!

Loyalty Surprise

By default when you reach a new level, an explosion sound would play. It was a great idea that didn’t turn out the way I planned since it surprises the crap out of players and may alert other players you’re near. It was originally only intended to play for the player themselves, but that seems impossible based on how sound works in Rust.

Anyways, I’ve disabled that sound. Thanks JoeKillera for the heads up!

Plane Crash

I don’t know why, but that dang plane keeps crashing into mountains and I keep raising the height of it! I’ve gone ahead and raised the height again, but it seems to defeat the purpose since the plane is meant to be a low flying plane! Well, I have to ensure it doesn’t crash since MrNiceGuy will be scooping up all the loot like he was doing last night! Thanks MrNiceGuy for the heads up 🙂

Kit Menu

Due to image related issues on the server, the kit menu (/kit) doesn’t work. I have however gotten the command line to work fine. This means you’ll have to go old school in order to get the kits instead by typing /kit <name>. You should also be able to type /kit list to see a list of kits available, but it might be long preventing you from seeing them all.

For your convenience, here’s a list of all the kits.

The kits starting with pc_ are related to the Player Challenges (/pc) so if you’re not leading you won’t have permissions to them. Hopefully this will hold us over until the issue is resolved.

Skip Night

Sorry guys, but unfortunately for now the Skip Night plugin doesn’t work. I’m not sure if it’s entirely due to the same image related issue as kits (the voting menu has images in it), but I can say during testing it flat out crashed the server so I’m not bothering with it for now.

I’m going to try to create a workaround using the store (/s) where players can buy the option to skip night, but that will take me a few days.

In-Game Store

The In-Game Store does in fact work (/s), but unfortunately there won’t be any images. This is again due to the image related issue. So it should work as you expect. It just won’t look at pretty.

Skin Shop

Unfortunately, the skin store (/skin shop) is also a casualty on both Modtopia and Vanillatopia. Yes, the image related issue. You can expect other items like the startup graphical menu (/ui) also not to work.

Server Issues

Overall, considering the amount of plugins we have on the servers, it could be worse. I was able to get much of the plugins going again including the map. However, the image related issues are out of my control at this point.

The issue was triggered by the patch, but it seems to be some combination with the patch and my host – who says they’re working on it, but I fear they have no clue. I have been shopping around for another host, but that’s not a comfortable process to undertake so I’m trying to be patient.

I’m considering a full wipe tonight (entirely reinstalling everything) to see if that helps, but I’m not very optimistic as I believe it’s a connectivity issue at the server level. Others who are having these same issues say they tried a full wipe so I might not bother.

Wipe

Tonight Modtopia is a wipe so the world starts a new! It might not happen until later in the evening since I have to be somewhere around 9pm EST and I’m not sure how long it’ll take. Regardless, this time around it’ll be interesting how things go with the zambies! Be careful out there Bumfuzzlers!

Rewards, Gather, In-Game Store

Hold on Bumfuzzlers! We’ve got a new wipe cycle and a bunch of changes that I hope will change the way Modtopia game play works in a good way. We’ve got store expansions, resource gather changes, kit changes and more! Check it out.

Resources

For a while now, I’ve known I needed to take a look at the resource rates and kits. When people are finishing the wipe cycle with 100’s of rockets and C4, it says to me the gather rates are out of control. I’ve also seen full bases go armor on the second day of the wipe which should not be happening unless you’re playing 48 hours straight! So, now that some of my schedule has been freed up, I’m going to get back to basics and dial things down just a little.

Here’s what I’ve changed:

  • ZLevels are now capped at 50
  • ZLevel level multiplier reduced from 2.00 to 1.25 (each level gained will multiply less)
  • Quarries have been boosted to 10x during the day, 12.5x during the night

My hope is to make Quarries more valuable and reduce the high level resource multipliers for individuals. The drop from 2 to 1.25 should result in a 37.5% cut in resource gathering which shouldn’t be massive, but it will surely be a reduction that I hope will make building more meaningful and raiding a little more frequent.

Kits

Some of the kits were just way too generous and they went against what I was trying to accomplish. For instance, starter kits were giving people enough to not only get a starter base up, but build a retirement home. That simply can’t stand. It’s critical that players have to do ‘some’ work to get resources and build their homes.

Here’s what I changed:

  • Startup Build kit
    • Wood: 10k lowered to 5k wood
    • Stones: 10k lowered to 2.5k
    • Changed usage to 1 times per wipe
  • Aid kit
    • Changed from 6 hour cooldown to 24 hours
    • Removed meats, left medical supplies
  • Weapon kit
    • Removed ammo
    • Removed Waterpipe Shotgun
    • Removed Custom SMG
  • Tools kit removed (tools are given when you spawn)
  • Weekly kit removed (it wasn’t very valuable anyway)
  • Trump wall kit
    • Stone: 25k lowered to 7.5k
    • Stone Walls: 25 lowered to 7 walls

Bradley Loot

With the lowering of gathering, I raised up the loot for the Bradley. The loot it gives, should you live to see it, should be Bumfuzzler good!

Rockets, ammo, weapons, C4 and a bunch of scrap!

In-Game Store

This will need balancing over time, but so far I’ve gotten the things in there at reasonable starting points. Some things might be too expensive or vice versa, but that will need some feeling out and some feedback from you all.

What’s really great about the store is that you can buy blue prints and also Reward Perks so that item that’s eluding you like the Large Furnace blueprint or the Bolty with 2 times the damage can now be yours for a price! Thanks to soundklown for requesting blueprints!

So you’ve noticed that you’ve been gaining money as you play. This is what you’ll use to buy items in the store. Once you have money, simply type /s in game to open the store. Once open, you’re going to need what’s called Reward Points or RP. You can convert your money into RP by clicking on exchange. Right now it takes $50 to gain 1 RP. Items in the store range from 1 RP to 6 RP. The reason for the conversion requirement is simply that money can be will be used for other things in the future. For instance now, you can use money for /skin shop which allows you to buy default skins for your items.

Remember, you automatically get money every certain amount of minutes played, but you also get them for breaking barrels. Furthermore, don’t forget you can steal it from other players, get money for damage dealt to other players and of course killing them.

Plane Crash

It used to be that the plane would crash into the highest mountains in the map so I raised it up 10 meters. Now it appears that’s not enough so I raised it another 5 meters. I think it’s hitting structures that people are building on those mountains. Well, just be careful. I’m going to see about making the plane create some serious damage to whatever it hits 🙂 Thanks MrNiceGuy for pointing out the plane was still crashing!

Anti-Offline Protection

Last week I made changes to the offline protection. Now instead of 10 hours it lasts for 5 as each hour it lessens by 20%. Unfortunately I missed the automated message which some were confused by. Thanks to MrNiceGuy to letting me know about it!

NPCs

A few of you have told me that it appears the NPC health is way too high requiring multiple bolty shots to kill them. It turns out health:100 in the settings refers to 100% of their default health. Scientists have 100 health, but murderers – the dumber zombie AI we currently have on our server due to Facepunch bugginess – have 150 health by default. This means 100 is really 150 health.

Let’s try out setting them a little lower. I’ve reduced their health 30% to 70. This should lower their health just around 100 health. Let’s see how it is. Thanks to MrNiceGuy and soundklown for the feedback!

I’ve also made changes to Jason Vorhees:

  • Health was reduced by 50%
  • Reduced his inventory
    • Wood went from 5k to 2.5k
    • High Quality Metal Ore went from 5k to 250
    • Stone went from 5k > 1.5k
    • Metal Ore went from 5k to 500
    • Removed C4
    • Removed bones

Jason still has some cool clothing and some valuable Skin Perk tools. Just remember, if you don’t kill him, he’ll track you down and kill you when you least expect it 🙂

Wipe Schedule

Last night was a wipe so get building! 🙂 I hope the weekly schedule makes things a bit more fresh for you all. It certainly will give me the ability to fine tune the server and get an idea of how changes will affect gameplay. I’m hoping for better balance between builder and raider. I’m sure I’ll be making several adjustments over the next couple wipes based on observation and feedback from you all.

Btw, I know I rarely mention Vanillatopia, but that’s just because the Vanilla experience requires few changes. I am planning on adding some new plugins to it, but of course the foundations of it will remain as pure as I can keep them. Modtopia is another story. Please as always keep the feedback coming. I’ve made a lot of small tweaks to both Vanillatopia and Modtopia which will hopefully equate to some improved gameplay for you Bumfuzzlers! We’ve got everything from resource spawning to meteor showers! Check it out!

Resource Spawning

The resources were spawning a bit slow on Vanillatopia so I decided to take a look at resource spawning on both Vanillatopia and Modtopia to see if I could make some improvements. Here’s what I changed:

  • Vanillatopia
    • Resources respawn 2x faster
    • Resources increased by 10%
  • Modtopia
    • Resources respawn 2x faster
    • Resources decreased by 10%

I decided to lower the resources on Modtopia because resource gathering is already very high and with all the plugins, this could increase performance for some people with lower end computers. Maybe some of you will get longer distance kills even! The amount of difference in count for instance is about 30 trees over the entire map.  I doubt it will be noticed and of course let me know if you feel any pain from this change and we can change it back. Keep in mind this is a change for all resources so it affects trees, animals, mushrooms, etc. It’s critical that I get feedback from you about how this is working. (Thanks to Rayyy for feedback)

Meteor Shower Event

What would life be without the occasional weather related disaster? Well, now, every so often, meteors will rain from the sky! They are random, in random areas of the map and they may be extreme or mild. They can absolutely do damage to players and buildings (but not much) so watch out! These showers come with falling debris in the form of resources!

This video does not do it justice, but it gives you an idea.

I’ve only added this event to Modtopia for now, but I’ll consider adding it to Vanillatopia in the coming weeks.

Bumfuzzler Forum

I’ve made a few additions to the forums that will hopefully make it more usable and friendly. Please enjoy the following tweaks!

  • Increased the font size in various areas
  • Added a visual editor for posting
  • Checkbox now default to notify you on responses
  • Can now post images inline
  • Can now use @mention and person will be notified

Loot Adjustments

I’ve made a few tweaks to the loot on both Vanillatopia and Modtopia in various forms. Here’s a run down of the changes.

  • Vanillatopia
    • Turned off blueprint spawning as they’re unlocked (I hope this time for good) (Thanks to Freshmeat911 for feedback)
    • Helicopter Pilot Eject event: the pilot now has inventory to loot (Thanks to Rayyy for suggestions)
    • Changed rarity of the Smoke Rocket to 3, the same as other rockets. It was disabled. (Thanks to Rayyy for feedback)
    • Smoke Rockets now spawn in Elite Crates. (Thanks to Rayyy for feedback)
  • Modtopia
    • Autokit for VIP: Removed food and torch, added 5 radiation pills (Thanks Orion and WRecKLeSS for feedback)
    • SuperHeli loot was weak. Now all crates will have at least 3 items each instead of sometimes 1 or 2 (Thanks to Obey Mike Opp for feedback)
    • SuperHeli loot now matches the SuperBradley loot tables (Thanks to Obey Mike Opp for feedback)
    • Ensured SuperHeli crates were set to 3 for regular and refuel events and at 1 for the pilot eject event (Thanks to Obey Mike Opp for feedback)
    • SuperBradley crates reduced from 4 to 3

Plane Crash

As has happened on Modtopia, it appears the plane was indeed crashing – into mountains! lol I’ve adjusted it’s fly height to 5 meters higher. Hopefully that will be the end to that. (Thanks to Rayyy for feedback)

Early Access, Boss, Flips

Big things going on with Rust and the server! I’ve got some updates on quarries, cars, plane crashing, the superheli and Rust leaving early access! Check this out for what you Bumfuzzlers need to know including a Valentine’s Day event preview!

Boss of Hearts

Well, Valentine’s Day is coming up and the server wants you to be its valentine 🙂 I’ve placed a February preview on one of the islands, but be careful. It’s called the Heart house and it’s home to the Boss of Hearts! She’s a little more of a brute than the other NPCs on the server. Get close enough to the Heart House and you’ll get yourself a hearty (get it? lol) kit haha Go at it and have some fun. I’ll be working on it a little more as I have time!

SuperHeli <3

I made a few small changes to the helicopter refuel event as it appeared to be somewhat easy for players. All you had to do was kill a few easy NPCs and then the SuperHeli sat there like a sitting duck waiting to be destroyed. I’ve made the following changes:

  • Max time it will decide to refuel was lowed to 500 from 600
  • Min time it will decide to refuel was lowered to 200 from 300
  • Time to refuel is now 120 lowered from 180
  • NPC Spawn Radius is now 5m instead of 4m

Hopefully it will give people less time to take out the NPCs and the SuperHeli which will make it slightly more challenging. I was going to enable the guns on it while refueling, but after testing it was too over powered. Thanks to Orion for his feedback and testing on the event.

Also, after speaking with the plugin author of HeliControl, it appears that the reason sometimes it appears the SuperHeli spawns so often is due to the fact that it spawns based on a timer and that timer doesn’t use the death of the last SuperHeli to determine the next spawn.

This means if the Superheli spawned at 4pm and is set to spawn every two hours and the pilot ejection event happens 4:20pm and then the refuel event happens at 4:59pm, the SuperHeli may still spawn at 5pm as it isn’t aware of the other events. The plugin author is going to detect the time of the last SuperHeli death and change the spawning to work based on that last death. I can’t promise when that will happen. In turn, expect sometimes the SuperHeli may haunt you.

Quarry Loot Fix

I believed the Quarries were set to output 5 times the normal amount, but the setting I used actually meant that it would spit out 5 of whatever item every 30-60 seconds. This made for some very slow earnings. I’ve now changed it so it’s 5 times that. Thanks to Jarl Balgruuf for noticing the slow trickle of resources.

Plane Crash off Center

There’s been a few times where the low-flying plane would crash into the mountains and this seemed mostly due to it flying over the very center of the map each time it spawned. A few of you asked to have it more varied in its flight path too. Now there’s a fix to ensure the plane doesn’t spawn over the center of the map each time like it once did. Hopefully this gives more players a chance at it.

Flippin’ Cars

The vehicles have had a bunch of issues, but most glaringly is the fact that sometimes you can get stuck and screwed up if the car flips upside down! Well now, it will automatically eject players from the car when it goes upside down and there’s now a command (/flipcar) that you can use to flip an upside down car over!

Rust Leaving Early Access

It’s hard to believe it, but Facepunch has finally declared on February 8th they will be leaving early access, but what does this mean to you? There’s surely some things that will change. They suggest one of them won’t be staff dedicated to the game and cite the reasons for making the change that they finally can say for sure they know where they are going with the game lol Sure took them long enough to do that! Two main things stand out to me as major changes:

  • Game updates will be changed to once per month instead of once per week
  • The game price will increase from $19.99 to $34.99

Surely this will save time for server admin like me as I can say updating the server every week can be challenging. For you Bumfuzzlers, you should have a more stable game with more meaningful patches each month. At least, that’s my expectation 🙂 I could be wrong.

Hey Bumfuzzlers! I’ve got a new installment of server updates for ya. The biggest changes this time around are for the monument NPCs, but I’ve also made a bunch of other adjustments. Give below a read to learn more!

Monument NPCs

These buggers have got a ton of updates and I think you’re going to really enjoy the changes. NPCs will now do the following:

  • drop static and dynamic loot instead of just the same loot over and over
  • have a roam range so they won’t wander too far away from their original purpose
  • drop their weapons instead of keeping them in their tool belt
  • you’ll encounter different looking NPCs with different weapons in single areas
  • turn on weapon flashlights or regular flashlights at night to look for you.

These new updates should definitely provide a much more dynamic situation.

Make sure you check out the quests (/q). They reward you with Skin Perks! 🙂

Anti-Noob Raid

It appears it wasn’t refunding raiding materials when raiding new players so I disabled it for now.  I’ll review it soon with testing and such. Surely new players need to be worked into the server gradually instead of being horribly mauled the moment they sign on lol

Plane Crash Event

The plane may have been crashing into the mountains again so I raised it up 5 meters. I hope it’s not harder to hit, but don’t forget about lock-on smoke rockets!

Quarry Low Grade Usage

Thanks for Orion for pointing out that Quarries were not consuming fuel. I fixed that. It turns out that the VIP Loyalty group’s ability not to consume fuel on lights spilled over into the Quarries. Now they should consume fuel as expected.

Offline Protection

There was some talk that offline protection was protecting players immediately on sign off. I’ve tested this and that is not the case. Players get their protection 15 minutes after sign off so are unable to use this as a defense against a raid.

Mini Map Zoom

Thanks to DjRYFY for letting me know that the mini map no longer allowed for zooming. I’ve since fixed this.

Loyalty

In the past there were times where players reaching loyalty levels haven’t gotten their new abilities in plugins, kits, etc. As of last night I can finally say this plugin is fixed and should not have issues. Due to this new confidence in the Loyalty plugin I may expand the Loyalty tiers with a couple lower tiers that will give new players the excitement of reaching new levels and gaining new abilities.

Server Rule Questions

There aren’t many rules on the server as I like to keep Rust as lawless as possible (type /rules for a list), but someone asked me the other day if walling off loot was within the rules. After considering it for a moment, I would say yes it is. The same goes for using the remover tool to remove walls or items during an online raid to prevent that raid from happening. On a server like Bumfuzzler Modtopia, where resources are abundant, players need to use whatever tools they have at their disposal to hide loot or stop a raid. I do appreciate this question though and welcome others like it as they challenge me to consider them. Thanks Orion!

Happy New Year Bumfuzzlers! I wish you, your friends and family the best possible 2018! To ring in the new year I have a bunch of server updates for you! Please enjoy!

Flare Gun

Now you can type /flare to spawn yourself a new gun that shoots flares! It’s pretty sweet! Woohoo! Ranged illumination!

Proximity Scanner

Based on feedback by DHJ Doge [GW], I decided to adjust the required items for proximity scanners. The default used CCTV Cameras and Targeting Computers. Most people will want to use those items for Auto Turrets. Here’s what the scanners require now:

  • 5 metal springs
  • 2,500 metal fragments
  • 5 sewing kits
  • 1 lock code
  • 5 sheet metal
  • 2,500 wood

Type /scan for more info and know who comes and goes in any area.

Vote Hero Kit

Voting is easy and it gives you some great benefits like a guaranteed daily supply signal. Over time, as you gain more and more votes, that number grows. On top of that, you have even more incentive to vote. If you are the player with the highest votes during the wipe cycle, you’ll get access to the new Vote Hero kit which includes 4 supply signals! The sky will be full of airdrops!

Plane Crash

It turns out there was a possibility the plane was crashing into the mountains as per feedback from Monkles. I set it to fly 5 meters higher than usual to hopefully avoid that. Here’s a video of the Plane Crash event if you haven’t seen it!

Server Rules

It’s been about time I set some rules because sometimes things get out of hand. If you type /rules you’ll now get a working list of rules that we’ll be using to govern the server. Here’s what you’ll see:

  • Breaking rules results in immediate ban. No exceptions.
  • Don’t do obvious wrong – hacking, exploiting, etc.
  • Don’t be jerkish – harassing, bullying, griefing, etc.
  • Don’t be abusive – cursing, racist, sexual, etc.
  • Don’t advertise – your server, other servers, sites, etc.
  • Don’t trash this server or admins for any reason.
  • Don’t assist others in breaking these rules.
  • Not reporting others for breaking rules may result in your ban.

Remover Adjustments

Unfortunately a few of you lost items due to remover tool mishaps. Due to that, I’ve made a change. Now when you try to remove a storage box that contains items, it refuses to remove the storage box, This way it protects you from making a mistake and losing all your items with an accidental remove. If you want to remove a full box, empty it first and then remove it.

New Quests

I’ve created 5 new quests, 4 of which will provide you with 4-5 Skin Perks – ya know those fancy items with special powers? Type /q to launch the quest interface and then choose the quest you’d like to fulfill. Once you accept the quest, simply fulfill it and claim your reward!

Here’s a list of the quests I’ve added.

  • Hemp Humper – Gather 5,000 Cloth
  • Stuck on you – Gather 50 Bottles of Glue
  • Fix Anything – Gather 50 Rolls of Duct Tape
  • Blood Transfusion – Gather 50 Bags of Blood
  • Spring Cleaning – Gather 50 Bottles of Bleach

We’ve got a couple of awesome updates for you Bumfuzzlers! Let’s get to it!

Plane Crash

From time to time, a low flying cargo plane will spawn. If you can hit it with a rocket launcher, it will crash into the ground and reward you with lots of goodies! If you hit it with 3 rockets it will explode in the air! I warn you though, it’s not as easy as it seems!

Skin Perks

I’ve greatly expanded the Skin Perks by adding 50+ weapons Perks falling under 3 different tiers!

During the last wipe, I made my first go at Skin Perks and you Bumfuzzlers seem to love it so I’ve expanded it in a big way. For those of you unaware, a Skin Perk is an item with a distinct skin that has special abilities such as:

  • Damage Animal: Increased ability to damage animals
  • Damage Building: Increased ability to damage buildings
  • Damage Entity: Increased ability to damage items such as Bradley and Helicopter
  • Damage Player: Increased ability to damage players
  • Dodge: Chance to avoid damage from players, animals, Bradley and Helicopter
  • Gather: Increased ability to gather more resources with tools
  • Repair: Decreased resources required to repair buildings
  • Upgrade: Decreased resources required to upgrade buildings

There are 3 tiers of Skin Perks:

  • Super Rare items spawn around 4% of the time.
    • Damage Animals, Players, Buildings & Entities: 2x damage
    • Dodge damage 7% of the time
    • Gather increased by 2x with tools
    • Resources required to repair and upgrade decreased by 10%
  • Rare items spawn around 13% of the time.
    • Damage Animals, Players, Buildings & Entities: 1.5x damage
    • Dodge damage 5% of the time
    • Gather increased by 1.5x with tools
    • Resources required to repair and upgrade decreased by 7.5%
  • Uncommon items spawn around 21% of the time.
    • Damage Animals, Players, Buildings & Entities: 1.25x damage
    • Dodge damage 3% of the time
    • Gather increased by 1.25x with tools
    • Resources required to repair and upgrade decreased by 5%
  • Common items spawn around 63% of the time.
    • No special properties or powers

Keep in mind Dodge items stack so having a full wardrobe of 5 Dodge laden items at 5% a piece will give you – you guessed it – a 25% chance of dodging damage!

NOTE: There is a known issue, if you stack two Skin Perks and then unstack them, you’ll look the perk from the one you unstack. I recommend for now, don’t stack Skin Perks! Thanks to DjRYFY for providing me with the exact steps to duplicate this!

Trump & Hillary

As of now, the issue has been fixed with assigning kits automatically when entering the Trump and Hillary zones! Enjoy gaining access immediately to goodies! 🙂

This was a fairly large patch and we have lots of plugins so let me know if something doesn’t work. I fully expect some aftermath, but let’s hope! 🙂 Have fun out there Bumfuzzlers!
