Leveling, Resources, Bump

Bumfuzzlers! I’ve got a short post that should be a big change, mostly for newer players and hopefully in turn for existing players as I believe it’ll help satisfy new joiners who expect a higher resource gain. At the same time, loyal Bumfuzzlers also see a slight bump too! Check it out.

Z Level Resources (Modtopia)

For a long time, I’ve had resource gain set low at the start and high at the end. The idea was to reward loyalty and players sticking around. Unfortunately, some players may never get the chance to be loyal Bumfuzzlers because they’re unhappy with the resource yield and they leave.

For instance, we have resource levels from level 1 to level 50. Starting out players are at level 1 getting about 12 wood per hit and at the level 50, they get 72. Then, players get 22 stone at level 1 and 157 at level 50. That’s an 83% increase for wood and an 86% increase for stone. That’s awesome gains and a massive boost for loyal Bumfuzzlers. Unfortunately, for new players,  at the start, they might expect 2-3 times the wood and stone per hit and would be pleasantly surprised with, but not expecting, an increase over time.

  • Level 1: 12 wood, 22 stone
  • Level 50: 72 wood, 157 stone
  • 83% increase for wood
  • 86% increase for stone

So I did some testing and I did some math (hopefully it’s right haha) and I believe I figured out a way to satisfy both new players and loyal Bumfuzzlers.

The levels (1-50) haven’t changed, but everyone starts off with about 3 times the resources. As levels increase, players gain increases at a slower rate, but by level 50, they’ll wind up with slightly more resource gain than they had before.

For instance, after the changes I’ve just made one hit for wood at level 1 to be 31 (increased from 12) and one hit for stone is 68 (increased from 22). At the high end at level 50 a hit of wood is 75 (increased from 72) and a hit of stone is 164 (increased from 157).

  • Level 1: 31 wood, 68 stone
  • Level 50: 75 wood, 164 stone
  • 60% increase for wood at the start
  • 59% increase for stone at the start

For the loyal Bumfuzzlers at level 50 they also get a slight bump.

  • Level 50: 75 wood (increased from 72)
  • Level 50: 164 stone (increased from 157)
  • 4% increase

Oh and by the way, at night instead of 3 times the resources, the base multiplier is 4, plus your levels go up twice as fast! 🙂

So, if my math is right I expect increases in a few areas. Give me feedback Bumfuzzlers! As always it’s critical to making sure the server runs at its best! It’s an evolution of sorts based on many factors! Have fun!

 

Ransack, Sympathy, Ladders

Ransack, Sympathy, Ladders

Hey Bumfuzzlers! I’ve got some big changes for you that will definitely change the way you play. I’ve finally been able to finish a new exclusive plugin, available to only our servers that will hopefully remake everyone’s experience with Rust when it comes to raiding. Along with that, I also have some large and small changes I wanted to let you know about. Read on!

Fuses (Modtopia)

Turned out there was a really low fuse count on the server so I’ve increased them a bit. Originally there were around 6 or 7 in the world, but now they’re a little more than double that. I can increase them more of course, but since it’s an important item, I didn’t want to saturate the loot tables with them. You will find that fuses will spawn either individually or in groups of two!

You can now find them in the following areas:

  • locked ch47 crates
  • elite crates
  • mine crates
  • mine carts
  • normal crates
  • underwater advanced crates

Bad Bot Behavior (Modtopia)

I’ve seen the bot either replying with answers that were confusing or not replying to questions. I’ve made some adjustments to ensure more questions are answered and some confusing wording is reduced – hopefully 🙂

Whatever you do, don’t tell the bot he’s handsome. He already has a big head!

Ladder Raiding (Modtopia)

For a long time, Modtopia has had ladders disabled in the building blocked zone. Well, it just so happened the other night beef cake asked me to enable them. I’ve been scheming to enable this for a while, but I was looking to complete a separate raid related idea first.

I’ve always felt allowing building building blocked zones negated the idea of the cupboard. I mean, why have a building blocked zone if others can build in that building blocked zone? It’s called a BUILDING BLOCKED ZONE lol Well, it is what it is, some like it and it does help with solo raiding.

Due to some other changes, that you’ll see when you read on, I’ve changed the server to allow ladders in building blocked zones. Watch your back!

Anti-Offline Raiding (Modtopia)

For a while now, players received a 5 hour Anti-Offline Raid Protection window. Ten minutes after you sign off, you get 100% protection and then it degrades each hour by 20% until it goes to zero. This is going to change slightly.

Instead of a 20% decrease per hour, Anti-Offline Protection will now decrease each hour by 25% to cover a 4 hour window. So, after 10 minutes, it goes to 100%, but then after an hour it goes to 75%, then 50%, 25% and then to zero.

For the record, I’m not a fan of the Anti-Offline Raid Protection, but mostly because it does a very poor job of communicating to the player, the fact that a base is protected. I also don’t like the various abuses that can go on with it. Due to this, I have been working on a replacement for this that I feel will be more fair, but it will be a little while until that’s ready.

As with enabling ladder raiding, this should encourage more raiding, bringing us to the major change I mentioned earlier.

Raid Sympathy (Modtopia)

Now to what I’ve been working on delivering to you Bumfuzzlers – an exclusive plugin you’ll only find here on our servers, that will hopefully cushion the tears typically associated with getting raided and hopefully reduce leavers who get raided and leave the server in search for freshly wiped goodness. Let’s face it, there’s a real suck feeling thinking of all the time you’ll have to spend getting your Rust life back together. No one likes that.

With the new plugin, Raid Sympathy, when someone raids you, the server will sympathize. In fact, it will sympathize to the point that it will give you a percentage of the resources lost due to damaged items. For instance, let’s say someone blows in your door. You’ll get a percentage of those resources back so you can either throw up a new door or quickly get a new base up and running. That means you can be back at it without much delay, dangerous and vengeful!

As of this post, this new plugin has gone into effect, but of course I expect changes over the next couple wipes until it’s tweaked.

How does it work?

  • Some Bumfuzzler blows up your stuff
  • 10 minutes after you’re violated, you are given 75% of the resources for that blown up stuff (this % may change in the future)
  • You are notified that you have these resources available, both every so often and when you sign on
  • You can check to see if you have resources available (/sympathy)
  • You can choose to accept the resources whenever you’d like (/sympathy get)
  • Resources will accumulate so if you’re raided again before you accept the resources they’ll be added to

What items are covered?

  • All basic structural items such as walls, foundations, frames, etc.
  • All structurally related items such as doors, window treatments, etc.
  • All items like barricades, water catchers, furnaces, etc.

My hope is that this will now balance out raiding. It’ll be easier to raid, but the affects of the practice will be less intrusive and won’t ruin the entire wipe for players even if they were foundation wiped. Sure you’ll lose items, but you’ll get something in return. If you build your base wisely, it should help you keep things going.

Leveling Gather Rates

I’ve tinkered with gather rates a little bit. I’m still trying to find the sweet spot. I was hoping to extend the levels from 50 to 100, but the math just isn’t there. It would give veteran players far too much advantage.

Here’s what’s been changed.

  • The default multiplier was raised from 1 to 1.25. This should hopefully help new players get resources slightly quicker.
  • The points per hit were raised from 30 to 50. Will help players gain levels faster.
  • The points per hit at night were raised from 60 to 100. Will make night more valuable.
  • The per level multiplier was lowered from 1.25 to 1.00.
  • The level cap remains capped at 50
  • The per level multiplier at night lowered from 2.0 to 1.5. You’ll still see some serious multipliers at night.

Don’t forget that Quarries are boosted to 10x the resources during the day and 12x at night! They should be a great source of resources.

Raid Notes

I switched plugins to help me log raids so that I’ll have the best information possible for if something doesn’t go as expected. Of course I’m watching you troublemakers! 🙂 I think given these changes, I’m going to need to have some more robust logging, but we’ll see! 🙂

Base Size Increase

To avoid spamming, the building size was set to 2,000 structural items. I’ve now raised this up to 2,500 to give designers a little more freedom – especially with the new changes to raiding. This way you can add just a few more walls in between you and the no-do-gooders!

After some testing, I’ve adjusted some of the recent changes regarding resources, fixed a couple things, added a couple things and I’m ready to add a couple more options come the next wipe, but shhh until then 🙂

Resources

Truth was, it was all about the Chainsaw, Charcoal and Sulfur anyway, but I over compensated in my last update. Sorry about that.  So, as per the previous post, here’s what I changed:

  • Wood consumption is back to it’s original setting of 10.
  • Charcoal production will remain at a 1 to 1 ratio with 35% loss for now
  • I recently set all the metals to 3.5, but this was too high, but I’ve adjusted those:
    • Metal Ore: originally 1.5, now set to 2.0
    • Sulfur Ore: originally 1.0, now set to 3.0
    • High Quality Metal Ore: originally 3.5, now set to 4.0
  • The Chainsaw will now give 80% of the wood it’d normally get. This is still 400-500 more than the best ax.

These changes related only to Modtopia.

Chainsaw Zlevels

Well, the darn buzzer gone and crazied up the Zlevels. It appears if you use a chainsaw you can level up really quick. Well, I don’t have a way to slow it down so for right now, the chainsaw will simply not give you any new levels to your wood cutting. It will of course allow you to gather wood as usual, you just won’t level up. This relates only to Modtopia.

Bumfuzzler Forums

I’ve had a few people ask me to create a forum so I tossed one up real quick. It needs some work, but should be functional.  Drop by, post and say hi or whatever you’d like! As long as you register for the website you should be able to access and post in the forums. You can access the forums here.

SuperHeli Timing

Due to some recent changes, I now have the ability to set a minimum and maximum spawn time for the SuperHeli.  Now it should absolutely come out less often so that the torture is far less than usual lol I have heard the screams and do pay attention! Now the SuperHeli will appear anywhere between 2.6 and 8 hours. So it could come out at 3 hours or 6 hours, it’ll be randomized. This relates only to Modtopia as Vanillatopia is at defaults.

Furnace Splitter

Unfortunately, the plugin has gone a little weird. Placing 1,000 wood and 1,000 high quality metal ore in the furnace would give you 3 stacks of high quality metal ore – 1,334, 333, 333 and 1,000 wood so you’d get an extra 1,000 high quality metal ore. Obviously that’s not good.

I disabled the plugin on both Modtopia and Vanillatopia and will update it when there’s a fix available.

Economics

You’ll notice at the bottom left of your screen that you’ll have a balance of money. I’m playing around with economics, but haven’t setup anything yet for players to buy with the money. For now, joiners should get $1,000 bucks, with a $500 one-time reward and then $5 for every 5 minutes of gameplay.

I’m going to be testing the idea of using money for buying various items in a store so that players are rewarded for their loyalty in a new way. I’m not sure if it will be ready for the next wipe, but I’ll try my best. Regardless I will have goodies the next time wipe comes around 🙂 This applies only to Modtopia.

Quests

I’ve added 5 more quests for your adventurer pleasure:

  • Top Secret – A top secret military installation is near, you need the pictures of it.
  • Teddy Snuggle – You don’t sleep well these days, find pookie bears for your bed.
  • Read the News – Get Wall Street Journals and be learned about the world.
  • SuperHeli Plans – Find research papers and find flaws in SuperHeli design.
  • Stay Awake – Gas Station attendants work long hours, use sticks to keep open eyes.

All of these quests, for now are rewarding with currency.

Also, there were issues with two quests – Stuck on you, where you had to gather bottles of glue and Blood Transfusion where you had to gathering bags of blood. Both of those quests should now be fixed. Previously you were unable to select them.

When in game, type /q for the quest menu. You’ll find these new quests under the Loot category. All of the items in the quests can be found from NPCs, but Pookie Bears can be found anywhere! This applies only to Modtopia.

You Bumfuzzlers have a great time. Please keep providing feedback. You all are a massive help to me and really make it a whole lot easier to manage things.

RustNET, Terminals, WipeBlock

I’ve got massive update for you Bumfuzzlers this week for sure cause this week, we’re rolling out the goodies! – and some other changes too! Read on for information on RustNET, automated searchlights, remote turrets, adjustments to security cameras, wipe block and more!!

RustNET

As of today, you’ll have access to RustNET – yes the Rust interwebs! On this network you’ll be able to remote control search lights, turrets and security cameras and also turn on/off turrets and searchlights as well as check the inventory of turrets and searchlights all from a single remote terminal you can access in the safety of your base!

Check out this video for a demonstration of how it works.

The following commands are available for all players:

/rustnet – This will give you all the help you need to get started
/terminal add – Create a new terminal (requires a terminal in your hands)
/terminal remove – Remove a existing terminal

Automated Searchlights

Now you can configure searchlights to automatically turn on and off at night and spotlight nearby animals, enemy players, NPCs, cars, tanks and helicopters. This makes it far easier to fight off a night raid in the event someone tries to sneak up on you in the dark or just go night hunting! You can also have it target friends and also yourself, but I’ve turned that off. Who wants to point out you and your buddies to enemies?

You have full control of the searchlights through RustNET. You can turn on and off automatic mode, take control of them and even access the searchlight inventory remotely!

  • Searchlights automatically turn on at night and follow a variety of objects if enabled through RustNET
  • Players can cycle through available searchlights by pressing JUMP or DUCK
  • Players can access and control the searchlight manually via a RustNET terminal
  • Maximum number of controllable searchlights is set to 6
  • Searchlights can be placed within 50 meters of the terminal (that could get interesting!)

The following commands are available for all players:

/sl add <terminal ID> – Converts the light you are looking at into a automated light that is registered to the specified terminal. Access the terminal to find the ID.
/sl remove – Removes the automation from the light you are looking at and removes link to terminal
/sl rotate – Set the lights default rotation to the direction the player is facing (for use with search mode)

NOTE: It appears when you exit out of controlling searchlights it places you in 3rd person. Just press F3 twice to get back to 1st person.

Remote Turrets

While turrets are surely effective, they may not always do what you want. Now, you can take full control of your turrets and take matters into your own hands! No more wasting bullets during a raid on enemies hiding behind a wall! Take control of the turret and shoot when you want to shoot!

Once you setup your turrets, you can access them from the RustNET terminal which allows you to remotely control your turrets, turn them on or off and access their inventory all from the coziness of your base!

  • Once remote turret is set up player can access that controller via the RustNET terminal
  • Players can cycle through available turrets by pressing JUMP or DUCK
  • Players need to be the owner, or a friend/clan mate of turret when registering turret
  • Maximum number of controllable searchlights is set to 6
  • Turrets can be placed within 50 meters of the terminal

The following commands are available for all players:

/rt – Shows help menu
/rt add <terminal ID> – Set the turret you are looking at as a remote turret registered to the specified terminal
/rt remove – Remove the controller from the turret/sign you are looking at

NOTE: It appears when you exit out of controlling turrets it places you in 3rd person. Just press F3 twice to get back to 1st person. Also, it appears you can’t cycle through turrets (I’m sure this will be resolved soon)

Security Cameras

We’ve had security cameras on the server for about a month, but because of the new RustNET plugin, I thought it would be fitting to post again about the awesomeness that are security cameras and explain how this has now changed.

RustNET now takes over for the old terminal used for Security Cameras, but it’s not a loss since RustNET is far superior. So just like you could use the Security Camera terminal with the cameras, you can now use the RustNET terminal with cameras – and turrets and searchlights!

  • Security cameras are linked to terminal via base. Any camera on base will assign to terminal
  • Players can cycle through available cameras by pressing JUMP or DUCK
  • Camera placement and controller access requires the user to be authorized on the TC
  • Maximum number of controllable searchlights is set to 4 for all players except VIPs who get 10

The following commands are available for all players:

/sc – Shows the help menu
/sc add <terminalid> – Activates the camera placement tool. (Requires a camera in the users hands)
/sc remove – Removes the camera you are looking at

WipeBlock

I’m trying something new to help avoid players from raiding so soon after a wipe and that is to disable certain items for a certain amount of time. My hopes are that this will create an early focus on building and help out players who are new to the server settle in and get ready for the veterans on the server.

Here’s how it’s going to work:

  • You can craft and find the items that are blocked.
  • You can’t place the blocked items in your tool belt to use until they’re unlocked.
  • If you place them in your tool belt before it’s time, it’ll advise you
  • You can type /wipeblock or click the icon in the lower left at any time for more info
  • All items will be unblocked in 48 hours
  • The following items will be blocked:
    • 12 hours: Assault Rifle, Bolt Action Rifle, LR300 Assault Rifle, M249, MP5A4
    • 36 hours: Satchel Charge, F1 Grenade, Beancan Grenade, Survey Charge
    • 48 hours: C4 Explosive, Rocket Launcher

It’ll be interesting to see how this turns out. Of course, I’ll adjust it as necessary based on the results and your feedback.

ZLevel Changes

Lately, I’ve been hearing lots of reports of foundation wiping which suggests to me that there may be an imbalance of resources vs. defense. I’m going to be looking at this more closely, but for now I made a quick, hopefully painless yet balancing adjustment. I’ve dropped the ‘Default Resource Multiplier’ from 3 to 2.

To get an idea of the affects this may have, I tested this as a level 11 in wood gathering. Originally my swings, not playing the mini-game were getting me 150 per hit. Afterward the changes, I received 125. This isn’t much of a drop really, but maybe it will balance the server slightly.

SuperHeli Changes

I’ve made a few changes based on feedback from various Bumfuzzlers. Many complained that the SuperHeli came out too much and based on my testing it appeared that was the case.

Turns out that multiple heli plugins were not working together, but now with some help from one of the plugin authors it should now work much better.

Now, the SuperHeli will only come out every 1-2 hours and no sooner. I still have to tweak which SuperHeli comes out – for instance, the malfunctioning copter, the one that refuels at a monument or the typical one, but I’ll do that over the next week. At least the SuperHeli isn’t as overwhelming.

Additionally, I’ve bumped up the SuperHeli cargo from 3 to 4 crates.

SuperBradley Changes

I figured it might be a good idea to beef the unsociable bugger up a bit in firepower, but lower its health a little. I’ve increased the gun accuracy by 30%, bumped the speed 25%, lowered the time it takes to get at the loot by about 30% after you destroy the tank and also lowered the health 250.

Additionally, I’ve upped the crates from 3 to 4.

Assault Rifle Health Issue

Finally I was able to narrow down why the AK would craft at less than full health. It turns out there was a very unassuming plugin – Magazine Boost that allows VIP players to crates weapons with 3 times the clip size. I didn’t even realize it allowed the settings for weapon health. Now I do! And it’s fixed 🙂
