Hey Bumfuzzlers! I’ve got some big changes for you that will definitely change the way you play. I’ve finally been able to finish a new exclusive plugin, available to only our servers that will hopefully remake everyone’s experience with Rust when it comes to raiding. Along with that, I also have some large and small changes I wanted to let you know about. Read on!

Fuses (Modtopia)

Turned out there was a really low fuse count on the server so I’ve increased them a bit. Originally there were around 6 or 7 in the world, but now they’re a little more than double that. I can increase them more of course, but since it’s an important item, I didn’t want to saturate the loot tables with them. You will find that fuses will spawn either individually or in groups of two!

You can now find them in the following areas:

  • locked ch47 crates
  • elite crates
  • mine crates
  • mine carts
  • normal crates
  • underwater advanced crates

Bad Bot Behavior (Modtopia)

I’ve seen the bot either replying with answers that were confusing or not replying to questions. I’ve made some adjustments to ensure more questions are answered and some confusing wording is reduced – hopefully 🙂

Whatever you do, don’t tell the bot he’s handsome. He already has a big head!

Ladder Raiding (Modtopia)

For a long time, Modtopia has had ladders disabled in the building blocked zone. Well, it just so happened the other night beef cake asked me to enable them. I’ve been scheming to enable this for a while, but I was looking to complete a separate raid related idea first.

I’ve always felt allowing building building blocked zones negated the idea of the cupboard. I mean, why have a building blocked zone if others can build in that building blocked zone? It’s called a BUILDING BLOCKED ZONE lol Well, it is what it is, some like it and it does help with solo raiding.

Due to some other changes, that you’ll see when you read on, I’ve changed the server to allow ladders in building blocked zones. Watch your back!

Anti-Offline Raiding (Modtopia)

For a while now, players received a 5 hour Anti-Offline Raid Protection window. Ten minutes after you sign off, you get 100% protection and then it degrades each hour by 20% until it goes to zero. This is going to change slightly.

Instead of a 20% decrease per hour, Anti-Offline Protection will now decrease each hour by 25% to cover a 4 hour window. So, after 10 minutes, it goes to 100%, but then after an hour it goes to 75%, then 50%, 25% and then to zero.

For the record, I’m not a fan of the Anti-Offline Raid Protection, but mostly because it does a very poor job of communicating to the player, the fact that a base is protected. I also don’t like the various abuses that can go on with it. Due to this, I have been working on a replacement for this that I feel will be more fair, but it will be a little while until that’s ready.

As with enabling ladder raiding, this should encourage more raiding, bringing us to the major change I mentioned earlier.

Raid Sympathy (Modtopia)

Now to what I’ve been working on delivering to you Bumfuzzlers – an exclusive plugin you’ll only find here on our servers, that will hopefully cushion the tears typically associated with getting raided and hopefully reduce leavers who get raided and leave the server in search for freshly wiped goodness. Let’s face it, there’s a real suck feeling thinking of all the time you’ll have to spend getting your Rust life back together. No one likes that.

With the new plugin, Raid Sympathy, when someone raids you, the server will sympathize. In fact, it will sympathize to the point that it will give you a percentage of the resources lost due to damaged items. For instance, let’s say someone blows in your door. You’ll get a percentage of those resources back so you can either throw up a new door or quickly get a new base up and running. That means you can be back at it without much delay, dangerous and vengeful!

As of this post, this new plugin has gone into effect, but of course I expect changes over the next couple wipes until it’s tweaked.

How does it work?

  • Some Bumfuzzler blows up your stuff
  • 10 minutes after you’re violated, you are given 75% of the resources for that blown up stuff (this % may change in the future)
  • You are notified that you have these resources available, both every so often and when you sign on
  • You can check to see if you have resources available (/sympathy)
  • You can choose to accept the resources whenever you’d like (/sympathy get)
  • Resources will accumulate so if you’re raided again before you accept the resources they’ll be added to

What items are covered?

  • All basic structural items such as walls, foundations, frames, etc.
  • All structurally related items such as doors, window treatments, etc.
  • All items like barricades, water catchers, furnaces, etc.

My hope is that this will now balance out raiding. It’ll be easier to raid, but the affects of the practice will be less intrusive and won’t ruin the entire wipe for players even if they were foundation wiped. Sure you’ll lose items, but you’ll get something in return. If you build your base wisely, it should help you keep things going.

Leveling Gather Rates

I’ve tinkered with gather rates a little bit. I’m still trying to find the sweet spot. I was hoping to extend the levels from 50 to 100, but the math just isn’t there. It would give veteran players far too much advantage.

Here’s what’s been changed.

  • The default multiplier was raised from 1 to 1.25. This should hopefully help new players get resources slightly quicker.
  • The points per hit were raised from 30 to 50. Will help players gain levels faster.
  • The points per hit at night were raised from 60 to 100. Will make night more valuable.
  • The per level multiplier was lowered from 1.25 to 1.00.
  • The level cap remains capped at 50
  • The per level multiplier at night lowered from 2.0 to 1.5. You’ll still see some serious multipliers at night.

Don’t forget that Quarries are boosted to 10x the resources during the day and 12x at night! They should be a great source of resources.

Raid Notes

I switched plugins to help me log raids so that I’ll have the best information possible for if something doesn’t go as expected. Of course I’m watching you troublemakers! 🙂 I think given these changes, I’m going to need to have some more robust logging, but we’ll see! 🙂

Base Size Increase

To avoid spamming, the building size was set to 2,000 structural items. I’ve now raised this up to 2,500 to give designers a little more freedom – especially with the new changes to raiding. This way you can add just a few more walls in between you and the no-do-gooders!

Hey Bumfuzzlers! It’s been some time since I posted about what’s coming in Rust and with the patch steadily approaching for June 7th, it’s probably a good idea to spill the can of beans! There’s quite a bit in the works you’re definitely going to want to see! Some of it will require some guessing though 🙂 Here we go!

Skydiving

I have my doubts that they are adding the ability for players to skydive, but they have in their plans to add the ability to freefall, parachute and land. I have a strong feeling this will be for NPCs. Maybe we’ll see an event that will have NPCs parachuting down from a flying vehicle? Then again…maybe I’m wrong and it is players!

I can say that early one when I added monument NPCs, I had an option available to me to have NPCs parachute out. It was really awesome to see. Unfortunately Facepunch released a patch that squashed that. Bumfuzzlers!

Bandit Town

It appears we’ll be getting a new monument that may play opposite the Scientist Compound. It won’t be in the next patch, but when it comes, there’s a good chance it may eventually come along with some sort of player rating system to determine who has been naughty and nice. The nasty ones may only be allowed into this swampy underbelly of society! You know who you are 🙂

Canoes

It appears we’ll be seeing a new raft, which appears to be a combination of the  our current raft and viking boat setup. This will allow for two people and will likely go faster if both paddle. The likely advantage is the lack of noise and required fuel and it will be potentially craft-able. Here’s some idea of what they may look like:

Fishing

I know at least one professional fisherman who is excited about this! Yes, we’re going to be getting fishing poles and it appears they will even have bobbers! Something tells me quite a few of you will be hanging out in your boats and rafts out on the water, sipping a beer and eating your latest catch! Good times 🙂 Feast your eyes!

Swimming Animations

It was quite a while ago that I posted information on hand gestures and we haven’t seen those yet, so I have no idea when we might see these. Regardless, they are surely coming and they will really do a great job of adding that immersive feeling when swimming.

Monument Puzzles

This one has been a long time coming too. I mentioned this several months ago. The reason I’m mentioning it now is that there’s been some activity and there’s a possibility some of this might make it into the next patch!

It appears there will be new areas added to the Power Plant, Sewer Branch, Military Tunnels and the Airfield among others that will incorporate situations that require key cards and fuses. These items will likely allow you to get past locked doors, but my guess is there may also be some other uses.

When I first mentioned these monument puzzles a while back, it was said that some of them might require more than one player. I’m unsure if that still holds weight.

Artificial Intelligence

There have been updates to AI and also some speculation on some things to come.

It’s apparent that scientists will gain an awareness of sound making silencers more useful. In fact, all weapons will be given different ratings when it comes to volume and, in turn, some weapons will alert AI and their buddies more easily. NPCs will also be given memory so that they hold a grudge for a while after negative interaction with you.

Lastly, the scientists at the junkpiles are currently in a defensive, passive mode on the staging branch so they won’t bother you if you don’t bother them. Also when triggered, they won’t bother anyone but the person who triggered them. This however, may or may not be in the next patch. We’ll see.

Well Bumfuzzlers, that’s quite a bit coming and I’m sure that’s not all. Stay tuned as the June 7th patch creeps up on us and enjoy! 🙂

 

Gestures, Oak, Floaters

Gestures, Oak, Floaters

There’s a bunch of things in the Rust pipeline I wanted to make sure you Bumfuzzlers knew about. Here’s a quick rundown of some goodies coming our way!

Floaters

Finally, players won’t be able to run out into the ocean to deny attackers loot. In the coming update, bodies float in the water and will even travel down streams with the flow of the water! Very nice update to enhance the realism!

Gestures

Finally gestures seem to be closer to reality with this video posted on Twitter by one of the Rust developers. Check out the video below to see the player wave hello, give a thumbs up/down, clap, surrender, give an ok sign and even point! This is really awesome!

Motor Boats

The motor boats that we’ll see in the next patch coming on April 5th now has some updated looks as it’s been polished and textured. It now has storage and requires fuel to run.

This water craft won’t be craftable and is said to disappear after about an hour – presumably if it’s not used. You can find it spawning on beaches and near lighthouses. Should be a nice addition.

Bullet Impact

Apparently now bullets will kick up the surface of water properly, but at the moment, at least in the staging branch, it just works on the ocean. I assume this is coming to streams soon.

Chinook

The Chinook is coming in this next patch is seems! It’ll be awesome to have a new event. What’s awesome is that they seem to have made it somewhat intelligent and it’s said they will be updating the Helicopter with that same intelligent AI in the future!

Scientists

They’ve been tweaking things a bit and it seems there is now a delay between sighting players and shooting at players. Also, they should be spawning at junk piles by default.

Skin Loading Fixes

I have had nothing but issues with plugins that use skins for roughly a month. It affected the loading of Skins for players and plugins like SkinBox (allows you to change skins of items /skinbox), SkinLoot (spawns in various skins for SkinPerks), SkinPerks (gives special powers to skins – “still broken it seems :'(” ), PlayersSkins (allows players to set default skins for items) and I believe even LustyMap (the map shown using key M and in upper left).

Apparently this last Thursday they’ve made some updates which have allows many of the plugins to work again. I’ll be tweaking all of this stuff soon and posting separately about it, but I’m hoping to see the server getting back to normal soon!

Oak Trees

The Rust landscape should get a great makeover soon with some new trees. In the next patch we’ll see Oak trees of all variations of leafy to bare, to dead.

In the future we’re going to see birch and beach trees too! You can see a pic of them below.

They’ve made some really nice graphical improvements over the recent months. I’m very impressed from where it’s come.

Hair Styles

Facepunch wants to ensure we get an assortment of player look and feel. They’re going to be adding shaved heads with larger beards, short afro’ish hairdos and even ginger setups!

Vikings, Decay Alerts, Bots

Got a couple of updates for you Bumfuzzlers and wanted to pass them along! Viking boats you say? Hmm 🙂 Yes indeed, read on to find out how you and your friends can set sail and more!

Viking Boats

That’s right! Now in addition to rafts, you can now have your very own Viking Boat decked out with sails, oars, several seats for your friends and some massive sea creds! Here’s a comparison of the Raft and Viking Boat:

The Raft goes at a speed of 4 (unless there’s more wind) and holds 3 passengers. The Viking boat’s speed can from 5-11 depending on how many players are in it and it fits up to 10 passengers! Now that’s a lot of Bumfuzzlers! The Viking Boat doesn’t require upgrades since it comes built to the max. The Raft starts at 50,000 wood and the Viking Boat is 75,000 wood.

Enjoy storming distant lands with your friends!

Decay Notifications

Nobody’s perfect. You forgot to put resources in your Tool Cabinet and now your base looks like Bumfuzzler. You’re not alone. Thousands of Bumfuzzlers suffer the same consequence every year. Now, with the help of decay notifications, you’ll be notified when your Cupboard is running out of gas. You can also check it manually by typing /tcstatus.

Keep in mind however, the plugin doesn’t seem to support multiple cabs so it might be a little flaky if you have more than one. I’ve asked the plugin author to consider adding a couple features to help with that.

Wipe this Thursday

Since it’s not in our schedule I want to remind everyone again that Facepunch is forcing a map and blueprint wipe this Thursday. This will affect all servers, not just Bumfuzzler Modtopia. Normally we would wipe on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month so I imagine this might catch a few Bumfuzzlers off guard.

Powerful NPCs

It appears there’s a couple of NPCs floating around that are wreaking some havoc on players now and again and it appears it’s related to the event where the helicopter refuels. Somehow, every once in a while, the bots associated with that event are left behind. This happens specifically at the Launch Site for some reason. If you get slammed repeatedly by a bot, please let me know the name of that bot. This way I can track it down and tweak it (hopefully) to be less commando. In the meantime I will try my best to adjust the NPCs to be mildly challenging.

With the impending Early Access exodus upon us, it appears the Facepunch crew is trying to tie some loose ends for you Bumfuzzlers! We’ve got various tips, AI changes and more so read on!

Noob Tips

To help new players along, there’s been a surge of Game Tips and Loading Tips. About 20 Game Tips will help new players survive in that first day while Loading Tips will make sure you get a full edumacation while loading the game on your 486. Pay attention!

Smarter AI

It appears the NPCs got a kick in the pants this week as “they will charge less, hug cover more and sidestep in/out from it.” Facepunch goes on to say “They will know the difference between advancing, flanking and retreating to cover, and when they retreat they will turn and sprint. They will also know when their cover has been compromised. They’ll stop to shoot, rather than run-and-gun with perfect aim.” Sounds to me like they’re getting much smarter so watch out out there! Especially with the Boss of Hearts! 🙂

Viewmodel Clothing

Finally we will be able to see our clothing in the first person view and in admires. This definitely will add more realism to the game and make it feel more complete. Check out the picture below to see what I mean. That’s going to look great with all the Skin Perks!

Water Wells

They’re adding two more variations of the water wells. I really like the look of them. They add a lot to the game.

Admire Changes

Looks like you can now admire your geetar while you play your magical tunes for the other players on the server!

Offline Raids, Supers, Loots

Bumfuzzlers, again, we’ve got lots to talk about! On the heels of all the recent changes, I have a new batch of modifications that I hope you like. Here we go!

Anti-Offline Raiding

I was going to wait on this, but DJRYFY put it in my ear and I figured maybe making changes before a wipe is better than waiting a week. With the new absence of ladders inside of building blocked zones, it’ll be harder to raid and even without that fact, I’ve been wanting to change the offline raiding for a while now. My goals were two-fold. 1) give less protection time and 2) make it easier to understand. So here’s what I came up with:

As always, once you sign off, protection will kick in 15 minutes from that time. Once it kicks in, it will initially go to 100% and decrease each hour by 10%. This will give you Bumfuzzlers some protection for up to 10 hours so you can go to work, eat your TV dinner and still have some bonus to spare! In the previous mode you’d have some protection up to 36 hours so this is a major change.

Here’s an example based on a sign off of 11:45pm:

  • 11:45pm you sign off
  • 12:00am 0-1 hours 100% protection
  • 1:00am 1-2 hours 90% protection
  • 2:00am 2-3 hours 80% protection
  • 3:00am 3-4 hours 70% protection
  • 4:00am 4-5 hours 60% protection
  • 5:00am 5-6 hours 50% protection
  • 6:00am 6-7 hours 40% protection
  • 7:00am 7-8 hours 30% protection
  • 8:00am 8-9 hours 20% protection
  • 9:00am 9-10 hours 10% protection
  • 10:00am protection has ended

SuperHeli Adjustments

To me it seems like some big ticket items – and a lot of them – are really easy to get. For instance, the Helicopter Refuel and Pilot Eject events are really easy to complete successfully. So I got to thinking it would be a good idea to start trimming around the edges a little. I didn’t adjust the loot in the crates, but I did adjust the crate amounts. For the Helicopter Refuel I cut the crates from 6 to 3 and for the Pilot Eject event I cut the crates from 3 to 1.

I also adjusted the SuperHeli to make it easier to take down in terms of health, but I adjusted it slightly in aggression. I cut the health in half (now 7,500), but increased speed by 25%, upped blunt damage 40, explosive damage 40, explosion radius from 5 to 7.5 and increased max rockets by 5. I did cut you Bumfuzzlers a break by adjusting the time between rockets from 0.35 seconds to 0.50 seconds 🙂

Loot Rarity

There were some items that I felt were a little off in terms of rarity. There were also some situations where items never even spawned out there in the world and I figure why not? Let’s do it. For the sake of discussion, keep in mind the rarity is on a scale of 0 to 5 like so:

  • Never Spawn = 0
  • Common = 1
  • Uncommon = 2
  • Rare = 3
  • Very Rare = 4

The following items never spawned:

  • bbq adjusted 0 > 1
  • fireplace adjusted 0 > 1
  • floor grill adjusted 0 > 1
  • floor ladder hatch adjusted 0 > 1
  • wooden box adjusted 0 > 1
  • large wooden box adjusted 0 > 3
  • flare adjusted 0 > 2
  • snowball adjusted 0 > 1
  • snowman adjusted 0 > 2
  • all Christmas tree and decorations adjusted 0 > 2

The following items I always thought were strangely set:

  • furnace adjusted 3 > 2
  • furnace large adjusted 1 > 3
  • code lock adjusted 3 > 2

The following were adjusted to make quests (/q) a little easier:

  • bleach 2 > 1
  • blood 2 > 1
  • glue 2 > 1
  • duct tape 2 > 1

Running Man Change

For the last few weeks I’ve been thinking this plugin gives players a free reward for sitting on their bums in their base trying to avoid someone from killing them. On the other hand, it gives them a reward for revealing their location since other players use it to find out where a players base is. Well, right now at least, I think this whole thing is a bad idea. I want players to be able to keep their bases secret, I want others to explore and I don’t want to give Bumfuzzlers rewards for sitting on their tookus.

So for now, I’ve disabled this plugin until I can consider adjustments.

Teleportation Adjustments

I’ve given everyone 10 more teleports. By default, Bumfuzzlers now get 30, Legitimate 32, Veteran 34, Allegiance 40 and VIP 50. This should help out getting around better!

SuperBradley Changes

The SuperBradley has for a long time despised the NPCs and felt the need to torture them with an endless barrage of relentless damage! It never really made sense to have the tank fire on what would most likely be his own team! Now, the Bradley will play nice with the NPCs and only hate you 🙂

I’ve also made some changes to the Bradley as well. The SuperBradley now respawns after 30 minutes, has a start health 500 higher, it’s turrets were adjusted to shoot 20 meters further and the speed was adjusted down 20%. Additionally, crates were adjusted down to 3 to match the SuperHeli.

Lifetime Packages

After some careful thought and a couple requests, I’ve added lifetime packages to the Bumfuzzler store. However, for now, I’ve only added this to the Warp Master, Blueprint Master,  Builder, Gather, Hunter & Raider packages. You’ll now find these packages available in 1 month, 2 month or lifetime varieties. I’ll consider expanding this to the other packages in the near future. Check out the store for more information!

Ladders, Accuracy, Bans

Got a few updates for all you Bumfuzzlers out there! It’s been a little quiet as I work on some things for February, but I assure you work is being done! Here’s a few items to note.

Blocked Zone Ladders

A while ago, after Facepunch enabled twig and ladder building in blocked zones, the server took a poll and decided to restrict those items – and we did. But then Facepunch enabled building on icebergs which required adding ladders back. Shortly after that, in true Facepunch fashion, icebergs were changed again – for the better – and now didn’t require ladder raiding. So, we’re back to where we were – I’ve disabled ladders in building blocked zones.

This will make raiding a little harder, but should also help protect the newer players for a bit longer. Let’s see how this goes and let me know what you think! (Thanks to DjRYFY for the reminder/suggestion)

NPC Accuracy

I did some testing and you’re right. Those NPCs are accurate for sure. I got in touch with the plugin author and discussed it. I advised that regardless of weapon or distance, the accuracy seems to be really good – too good. He replied.

“Fair enough – Making their response more realistic is definitely a step forward, in my opinion, but, right now, accuracy is one fixed number. If they’re ten feet away or 300 meters away, it’s the same accuracy. In future versions I’ll make accuracy diminish with range, although FP may get there first. 😉 If it’s not too tricky I’ll have different scales for different weapon types.”

So, it appears the accuracy is a bit across the board with no ideal fix in sight. For recourse I’ve adjusted the aggression range to 20 meters instead of 40 meters. Approaching them outside of 20 meters is safe and running away from them 20 meters or more is safe. I would advise you aim well if you fire!

If you feel they are way too strong and they are preventing monument access to the point you feel they should be disabled, let me know.

Loading Screen Goodies

When joining, you should see a nice new loading screen welcoming you 🙂

Improved website search

I’ve seen a few searches go bad and Bumfuzzlers not finding what they need so I tried to improve this. Give searching a try and let me know if it works better for you. However, if you don’t find what you need, try searching for different words. Sometimes that’ll help.

Turbo Gather Hunt

I noticed that the Turbo Gather, the plugin that gives you a harvesting boost at times, was giving a 1x boost after a successful hunt. This is no boost at all! I’ve adjusted this to 1.25x so after you get the kill, expect to have a short boost for gathering.

Player Ban Lifting

I’m not a huge fan of banning players and only do it when I must. I generally like to ban based on time and not permanency. Given that, on the next wipe – Thursday January 18th – I’ll be removing a couple of bans – not all.

Please note, if you’re one of these players, I’ll be paying extra attention to you. Make sure you follow the /rules to a ‘T’. Next time is permanent without question.

I put in a lot of work and the Bumfuzzlers who play here do too. I’m not going to tolerate anyone who even remotely creates problems on the server or spoils that. Be warned!

NPC, Flashlight, Variance

Hey Bumfuzzlers! I’ve got a new installment of server updates for ya. The biggest changes this time around are for the monument NPCs, but I’ve also made a bunch of other adjustments. Give below a read to learn more!

Monument NPCs

These buggers have got a ton of updates and I think you’re going to really enjoy the changes. NPCs will now do the following:

  • drop static and dynamic loot instead of just the same loot over and over
  • have a roam range so they won’t wander too far away from their original purpose
  • drop their weapons instead of keeping them in their tool belt
  • you’ll encounter different looking NPCs with different weapons in single areas
  • turn on weapon flashlights or regular flashlights at night to look for you.

These new updates should definitely provide a much more dynamic situation.

Anti-Noob Raid

It appears it wasn’t refunding raiding materials when raiding new players so I disabled it for now.  I’ll review it soon with testing and such. Surely new players need to be worked into the server gradually instead of being horribly mauled the moment they sign on lol

Plane Crash Event

The plane may have been crashing into the mountains again so I raised it up 5 meters. I hope it’s not harder to hit, but don’t forget about lock-on smoke rockets!

Quarry Low Grade Usage

Thanks for Orion for pointing out that Quarries were not consuming fuel. I fixed that. It turns out that the VIP Loyalty group’s ability not to consume fuel on lights spilled over into the Quarries. Now they should consume fuel as expected.

Offline Protection

There was some talk that offline protection was protecting players immediately on sign off. I’ve tested this and that is not the case. Players get their protection 15 minutes after sign off so are unable to use this as a defense against a raid.

Mini Map Zoom

Thanks to DjRYFY for letting me know that the mini map no longer allowed for zooming. I’ve since fixed this.

Loyalty

In the past there were times where players reaching loyalty levels haven’t gotten their new abilities in plugins, kits, etc. As of last night I can finally say this plugin is fixed and should not have issues. Due to this new confidence in the Loyalty plugin I may expand the Loyalty tiers with a couple lower tiers that will give new players the excitement of reaching new levels and gaining new abilities.

Server Rule Questions

There aren’t many rules on the server as I like to keep Rust as lawless as possible (type /rules for a list), but someone asked me the other day if walling off loot was within the rules. After considering it for a moment, I would say yes it is. The same goes for using the remover tool to remove walls or items during an online raid to prevent that raid from happening. On a server like Bumfuzzler Modtopia, where resources are abundant, players need to use whatever tools they have at their disposal to hide loot or stop a raid. I do appreciate this question though and welcome others like it as they challenge me to consider them. Thanks Orion!
