Skip Night

I made a couple of tweaks to the way the Skip Night works to hopefully improve the usability.

Here’s what I changed:

  • The vote now stays open 90 seconds instead of 240.
    • Why have it on the screen for 4 minutes?
    • It raises the chance of a night
  • On a successful vote, it changes the time to 9:00 instead of 8:00.
    • I found the jolt of going from 18:00 to 8:00 to be jarring. 18:00 is mostly light, but 8:00 is slightly dark.
  • Now you should only be asked once to vote instead of 3 times throughout the night.

Hopefully, this makes the feature a bit more seamless.

Jason Voorhees

I’ve been meaning to make a few changes to Jason. Honestly, he’s not killing enough people!

Here’s what I changed:

  • Health slightly increased
  • Spawning radius increased
    • Now it’s harder to know where he might be
  • Accuracy was slightly increased
  • Damage was slightly increased
  • Respawn time was doubled
  • De-aggression range was increased
    • He’ll now follow you further
  • Metal Chest Plate removed in favor of road sign armor

Clans & Groups

The server is a solo/duo/trio server. This means that groups of 1, 2 and 3 are acceptable while any group above 3 is not. It’s in the server title and description and it’s common terminology for Rust that most people understand.

This limitation is put in place because groups larger than 3 would easily dominate a group of two and surely a solo player. Smaller groups make up the majority of most Rust servers and they need to feel ‘reasonably’ comfortable about their chances of survival. From the server’s perspective, a group of 6 joins the server, they raid the smaller groups at will, those smaller groups leave, the large group has no one to raid, they themselves move on and leave the server without players. Thus, they ruin the experience for everyone.

Given that I recently saw behavior that violated this limitation, I posted about it in Discord and now am writing this to make sure everyone is on the same page because, afterward, it appeared some of you expressed confusion. So let me clarify further and explain some changes I made:

  1. Groups of more than 3, working together, are not allowed.
    • Working together is defined as, on multiple occasions – raiding, sharing resources, sharing bases, being friends to give access to cupboards and doors, friendly-fire, etc.
    • Trading is encouraged for anyone, clan to clan, solo to a clan, etc. Obviously trading C4 for 1 wood to share resources isn’t.
    • Sharing items and resources with new players to get them on their feet is a noble practice and is allowed.
  2. I’ve disabled the clan alliance feature in clans (/clan) to discourage groups working together.
  3. I’ve limited friends to 3 (/fmenu).

So here’s a little FAQ for those who are still confused:

Q: If two people raid who aren’t part of the same clan is that ok?
A: Sure. It’s only two people. However, if either of those people, at some other time, work together with larger groups of 3, that’s a no-no because it will equal 4 or 5 players technically. The two people may want to form a clan if they work together often (/clan) and work as a duo.

Q: I raided with one player last week, then a different player today, and tomorrow I’m raiding with someone else. Is that ok?
A: It’s not a direct violation, but I would suggest not giving off the impression that you’re part of a larger group. It would seem as though you’re in a group with 4 people.

Q: I’m in a clan with two members. Can I raid or take down the SuperHeli with a solo player?
A: Sure. That’s only 3 players. I would however strongly suggest you make them part of your clan and don’t change out that 3rd person every other day. It’s like the previous situation.

Q: What if I was part of a clan, then I left and now I’m still friends with one of them? They have 3 members and I’m playing solo now.
A: You need to unfriend them (/fmenu). Otherwise, you’re still sharing resources because you’ll have access to each other’s locations, doors, cupboards, friendly-fire, etc.

Q: Is giving a player items a violation of this rule?
A: No, it’s not, but there’s a difference between giving a new player or a recently raided solo player an item or two out of kindness and giving another group items in an effort to work together somehow. The intention here is important.

You get the idea I think. You is all smarwt poeple. The idea is to ensure you don’t leverage the strength of a group larger than 3 people because it would be considered ‘ganging up’. If players believe they’ll be steamrolled, it’s doubtful they’ll want to play.

I’ll do my best to be fair about this, investigate and ask questions, but if you screw with me and you’re dishonest, I’ll know. Please be reasonable and fair with me and you’ll get that same fairness in return. For this wipe and for first-time offenders, I’ll be giving warnings. After warnings, I’ll be giving out temporary bans of longer and longer duration.

Super Heli

There were a couple of things that needed changing so I did a little review of the SuperHeli settings.

Here’s what I changed:

  • I modified the way the SuperHeli is purchased from the store (/s) so now it’s more reliable than /callheli
  • Napalm is disabled for now. It causes too much lag. This, unfortunately, disables fires at the crash site. It’s a temporary fix.
  • I’ve raised the SuperHeli’s health slightly.
  • I’ve given the SuperHeli more rockets so it doesn’t run out.
  • The SuperHeli will now stick around for 10 minutes instead of 7. /callheli however may not abide by this.
  • The /callheli cooldowns have been adjusted:
    • Level 17 (/loyalty): 6-hour cooldown
    • Level 23 (/loyalty): 3-hour cooldown
    • Level 27 (/loyalty): 1.5-hour cooldown

Keep in mind buying the SuperHeli from the store is far more reliable than using the /callheli command, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. In testing, I’ve never had it fail to come, but some players suggested that does happen. This happens far more with the /callheli command, but that of course is free.

Be careful not to call the helicopter when another one is present. There’s a limit of 1 SuperHeli in the world and exceeding that will ensure your called /callheli will go bye-bye automatically.

In-Game Store

For a while, there’s been some less than desirable behavior from the store when purchasing commands. For one, calling the SuperHeli was spotty at best. Secondly, some commands like buying night and day left players completely confused since day just switched to night without warning.

Here’s what I’ve changed:

  • As mentioned, the SuperHeli on call is more reliable.
  • Every command you buy, with the exception of Turbo Boost, will send a message to the server letting them know you purchased it.
  • The SuperHeli purchase was raised from $250 to $300
  • The Meteor Shower was lowered from $500 to $450

Power Tools

The Jackhammer and Chainsaw may have been a little too easy to find so I’ve done a little tweaking to it.

Here’s what I changed:

  • The chainsaw is slightly rarer
  • You can only find the Chainsaw and Jackhammer in the following places
    • Code Locked Crate
    • Military Crate
    • Advanced Underwater Crate
  • I’ve removed the blueprints for chainsaw and jackhammer from the store (/s)

Now that these work with Z-levels, they should be more important and accordingly no one should get 8 of them at the start of a wipe.

Various Issues & Fixes

After this recent patch, we had a few issues and there are still some outstanding, but I’m working on them. Here’s a quick listing.

  • Duel (/duel) kit isn’t available when being in top 3 spots – Thanks for feedback Naraskgrim

I’m sure there’s more issues waiting to be found, but this is what I know or remember right now. Let me know if you find anything else and I’ll work on them.

Server Promotion

I’ve had a couple of you ask how you can help promote the server and I’m extremely humbled and grateful you would do that.

Here are a couple of ways to promote:

  • Vote daily
    • Click Vote in the website menu at the top
    • This ranks the server at www.rust-servers.net
    • This gives you daily signals and a few economy bucks in the game.
    • Did you know the more you vote the more you get? There are tiers of 50, 100 and 250 for voting counts. If you vote 250 times you get 5 signals each time.
  • Upvote Steam Group Posts
    • When I post on the website, I post in the Steam Group
    • Give the posts a thumbs up so it shows in your Steam feed
    • Leave a comment and/or subscribe to the thread
  • Use www.bumfuzzler.net elsewhere on the net
    • If you make posts or drop links, it helps boost the ranking among search engines for the website
  • Reddit posts
    • I make posts on Reddit to promote the server
    • Upvoting these posts creates tremendous visibility, most posts get 1 upvote at most so even two help a lot
  • Stream playing on the server
    • Stream yourself playing on the server
    • If you have a Twitch account and you regularly steam, send it by. I’ll promote you too.
  • Tell your friends
    • Word of mouth is probably the best way to promote
    • Gift Rust, it’s just $8 until July 9th with the Summer Sale

Be creative! I just ask that you don’t romote Bumfuzzlertopia on other servers or in any way disparage other server admins or servers in order to promote. That’s not cool and I wouldn’t like it if someone else did that the other way around.

Ore Population

A couple of people complained that ores were hard to come by. Most likely that was due to them being in the snow or desert because, after a review, it appears they were low in those biomes. The grassy areas had a good amount already.

I’ve gone ahead and raised the density of ores:

  • Raised ores in snow biome 166%
  • Raised ores in desert biome 201%

This should make ore a lot easier to find.

Naming the Bot

We’ve had the poll up for a few days now and we have some clear front-runners! I’m going to let it run until the next wipe I think.

Here’s what we have for the top 3:

  1. Earl
  2. Trump Jr.
  3. Donald, Donald Jr., Otis (tied for 3rd)

What’s up Bumfuzzlers! I’ve got a lot of really awesome stuff coming your way in this update that I know you’re going to love, including new events, some balancing, and fixes! I’ve revisited water vehicles, added a throwback helicopter event, added a brand new cargo ship event, worked on balancing components, tweaked loot for airdrop|bradley|superheli, made home teleport improvements, and added a new custom Trumptastic monument! Then, it’s time to discuss the upcoming wipe and Facepunch patch! Check it out!

Rafts (Modtopia)

Ahoy yee Bumfuzzlers! šŸ™‚ A while ago, we had rafts on the server, but when the boats came out, I disabled them figuring they wouldn’t be used. Now with all the waves, it seems the boats are a little rough so I decided to enable the rafts again.

Now you can make your own houseboat and sail around the world like theĀ BumfuzzlerĀ you are! TypeĀ /raft for more information in-game and watch the video above for more information on the different features!

Here’s an overview of the commands:

So you can build your houseboat, go cruising with friends, fish off the side, and even find some loot boxes bobbing in the ocean!

Rust Titanic (Modtopia)

I’ve got a new event for you Bumfuzzlers and you’re going to love it! It’s really awesome. The Cargo Ship gets attacked by pirates and crashes into an iceberg leaving you in the middle of loot and pirates!

All you have to do is get past the pirates and grab the goodies before the ship sinks into the Rustonia Ocean!

I’m going to be testing it for the remainder of this wipe which means loot will be balanced as time goes on. Please enjoy this new edition!

ZambiesĀ (Modtopia)

For those of you who pay attention to politics, I’ve made a slight adjustment to the zambies that you might appreciate. I’ll let you find it on your own šŸ™‚ It should provide a nice compliment to Trump Tower and Hillary House.

Homes (Modtopia)

Now when you type /home,Ā  you can see how homes you’ve used and how many homes you have overall! No more guessing or waiting to use homes to know!

SuperHeli Malfunction (Modtopia)

The chopper is going down Bumfuzzlers! That’s right! And with that fact, the loot carrying pilot ejects and the smoking SuperHeli carcass reveals additional goodies! You best investigate the crash site šŸ™‚

Here’s a quick look at what you can expect:

Loot (Modtopia)

I’ve been gathering feedback about the loot and now is a good time to take a deeper look. After some more testing, it’s now a bit better, but I definitely walked the line so it’s reasonable. Let me know what you think. I’ll keep tweaking it until it’s spot on.

Here’s what I’ve changed:

  • Increased components so you’ll now find them more often and more of them in barrels and boxes
  • Increased airdrop from 4-8 items to 6-10 items
  • Removed some of the lesser items from airdrops, Bradley and helicopter loot to ensure more valuable items come through
  • Removed blueprints from high-end crates like timed, elite, mining, tools, advanced underwater and minecart. This should give more slots for high-quality items.

The Southern Border (Modtopia)

There’s a caravan driving up from the south and as Trump says, “They’re not sending their best!” You’ve got to get down there and secure the Southern Border before it gets overrun by illegal migrants!

Similar to the other monuments, you’ll get a kit for getting there, but this one, unlike Trump Tower and Hillary House isn’t a cakewalk. After all, there is a caravan!

This monument will move around each wipe, but I expect it will always be near the entrance to the desert biome on a road somewhere.

Long Shot Kills (Modtopia)

There was an issue with getting kills on animals and players over 260 meters or so and I had some trouble nailing it down. Now I’ve got it licked.

It turns out, for some odd reason, the issue was due to the plugin that allows rideable animals. After disabling that plugin I was able to consistently kill animals at 300-350 meters. I’ll work on fixing the rideable animals at some point, but for now, it’ll remain disabled as I believe being able to make those long shots takes priority.

Wipe

We’ll be wiping both Vanillatopia and Modtopia this Thursday, April 4th as there will be a patch released by FacePunch. Not sure of all that we’ll see in the patch, but here are a few videos that might foreshadow things to come.

The wipe can be expected anywhere between 3 pm and 7 pm EST typically, but sometimes it happens much later if FacePunch has issues. Given that it’s a monthly wipe so economics and blueprints will wipe along with the map. On Modtopia, the Bunny Ranch will be making a showing in April in celebration for Easter!

Protection, Prestige, Blacklist

Hello Bumfuzzlers! Again I have some pretty big changes for you to be aware of! We have some nicey nice updates to the interface, smelting adjustments courtesy of the latest patch apparently, signage punishment, offline raid protection, raid sympathy, and the toughening up of Mr. Jason Vorehees! Buckle up! šŸ™‚

Info Toolbar (Modtopia)

With the addition of the recent patch’s compass, it screwed up the toolbar a little bit. The toolbar I’m talking about shows the time, player count, heli/airdrop/radiation indicator, currency, coordinates and direction. So, I had to painfully arrange it. At the same time, I figured I’d take the time to make it look nicer with color images, adjust the font sizes, etc.

It still needs more tweaking, but it’s good for now. I hope you like it!

Melting & Smelting (Modtopia)

When the patch hit, it apparently doubled all of the output and speed of the furnaces šŸ™ I’m unsure if this was the patch itself or the plugin I was using to control smelting. Some of you surely got away with some good cookin’, but now, I’ve cut production and even a little speed as well.

The by product, like charcoal and high quality metal, should now be back down to a realistic output and as I mentioned I lowered the speed just a little. I’ll likely tweak this slightly higher by next wipe, but we’ll play it by ear. I was just concerned with ensuring resources weren’t out of control.

I’m going to possibly consider changing smelting plugins so that I can better control the way it’s all handled. For instance, I can foresee large furnaces not only holding more items (as they do already), but maybe yielding more returns and smelting much faster.

Sign Blacklist

Too many fools, too little time. I’m getting a little tired of people making signs that are just downright evil. So I have a present for everyone including those fools.

If you’re found making signs that are vulgar, racist or the like, I will personally deface your sign to make it something I doubt you’d want, and I’m going to add you to a list so you can’t work with signs again. No mercy! Grow up or shut up! šŸ™‚

Jason Vorhees

It appears the zambies are killing Jason. He doesn’t have a chance. All these Freddy vs. Jason movies were somewhat balanced (even though I think Jason is the man — or err something of man), but this zambie vs. Jason setup just ain’t!

I’ve adjusted Jason in the following ways to give him a chance against the zambies:

  • Health raised by 250 for a total of 750
  • Damage raised by .1
  • Accuracy raised by .1
  • Now that I have more control over agression:
    • Aggro range is 100
    • Deaggro range is 50

Hopefully this means you can find him in places other than beneath piles of zambies!

Raid Protection

You’ve been warned! Raid Protection is dropping for some of you. As of this post, I’ll be reducing the Anti-Offline Raid Protection to Prestige levels 1-9 (/loyalty). This should give newer players protections for a short while, but remove it from the more savvy, veteran players. Hopefully this results in more grown upĀ Bumfuzzlers!

This means, as soon as you hit Level 10 (Legitimate), you’ll no longer have Anti-Offline Raid Protection (!offline). Be careful out there!

Additionally, to compensate for some easier raiding, I’ll be further modifying Raid Sympathy.

Raid Sympathy

Until now, Raid Sympathy has been set to 75%. This means if someone destroys your base during a raid, you’d get 75% of the resources back for walls, furnaces, boxes, doors, etc.

Due to the reduction in Anti-Offline Raid Protection, I’m going to increase the Raid Sympathy to 100%. It’s still not much because when people raid, you only lose some resources through destruction. Most of it’s from losing your loot. However, it is nice to get some goodies back!

Cross-hair

It turns out Prestige Level 14 and Level 15 (/loyalty) were unable to use cross-hairs. I’ve resolved this thanks to feedback from Doc and JoePerry. Aim away!

Prestige Levels

I’ve made a few adjustments to the Prestige levels by assigning various permissions across a few levels instead of just giving them out like candy to all players.

Here are the changes:

  • Level 1 – Level 10
    • Anti-Offline Raid Protection
  • Level 9
    • Tame horses, extend your inventory
    • Trigger multiple C4 at once (!tec)
  • Level 12
    • Easily grab loot with Loot All box function
  • Level 14
    • Tame wolves, extend your inventory
  • Level 16
    • Tame stags, extend your inventory
  • Level 17
    • Create an automatic dump box
  • Level 21
    • Tame bear, extend your inventory

SuperHeli

Originally, players complained the SuperHeli was always hanging around so I dropped it’s lifespan from 15 to 7 minutes. Unfortunately, I believe this caused an unintended consequence. What might be happening is that at 7 minutes, whether you’re in a battle with the chopper or not, it flies away. For the Bumfuzzler who is fighting a smoking, nearly destroyed SuperHeli, that can be frustrating!

I’ve increases the time one more minute to 8 minutes. It’s not much, but it’s something. I’ll adjust it more and more in time as needed to get the balance right. ThanksĀ Obey Mike Opp for the feedback!

Recycling, Sliding , Rolling

Hey Bumfuzzlers! Got some really nice changes coming your way and also a bunch of improvements based on your feedback! We’ve got changes to doors, recycling, treasure maps, choppers and much more! Check it out!

Treasure Maps

I’ve made a couple of updates to the treasure map functionality that make it work better.

  • Treasure maps can now be dropped on the ground and picked back up
  • Right-clicking maps is now the same as /markmap
  • Right-clicking gold coins is now the same as /sellgold

Here’s a video to show you how the right-clicking works.

There’s a couple of things to consider.

  1. You have to place the map or gold into your toolbelt
  2. Sometimes I’ve found you have to left-click it and then right-click.
  3. It may seem to go back into your inventory for a second, but it’ll do its business.
  4. The loot for the treasure is exactly the same as the boxes you find in the world. In the future it will be expanded so that these boxes have a higher quality of loot. However, keep in mind there are different maps so finding an elite map will give you an elite box and so on.
  5. I’ve enabled the Treasure Maps on Vanillatopia, but only the maps, not the gold coins because there is no economy there.

Sliding Doors

I made the decision to run this plugin a while back so when isueIt brought it up, I said why not?

Sure, the aesthetics are awesome and it feels cool, but it’s also very functional. The swinging doors are so annoying at times and it’s really hard to move around your base trying to figure out which way they swing. Sometimes you’re stuck accidentally because they block each other and so on.Ā  Additionally, because these doors slide, you can also stop them mid-slide to create a slot to look through! Very cool idea.

Once you hit Level 11 (500 /loyalty points) just look at a door and typeĀ /sdoor. This will toggle a door between swinging and sliding.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Once you make a door sliding, you won’t be able to pick it up unless you convert it back to a regular door.
  • Some have reported losing their code locks although in testing I haven’t seen it. Please pay attention to this!
  • This only works on single doors for the moment. Double doors are not supported.
  • I haven’t tested this with the plugin that automatically closes doors when you sign off (/ofd) This ability is available to players who are Allegiance level and above (5,000Ā /loyalty). I assume it will work just fine, but let me know if you see anything to show otherwise.
  • As I mentioned, sliding doors will be available to players who are Level 11 (500 loyalty points /loyalty) and above.

Base Recyclers

I haven’t been a huge fan of the way recycling worked. The fact that players – who have permissions – can recycle anywhere is somewhat over powered if you ask me. Top that with the fact that I’ve been seeing lots of errors with it. So for a while I’ve been eyeing a solution that I decided was time to implement.

Instead of being able to simply call up a virtual recycler, you’ll now be using an actual recycler like the one you can find at various monuments. This recycler, you will craft and it will stay in your home(s) to use whenever you’d like.

Here’s some of the starting settings we’ll be going with:

  • To craft the recycler you use the command /rec
  • You’ll require the following resources: Scrap – 250, gears – 15, metal spring 15.
  • All players will be limited to 2 recyclers
  • Cooldown for crafting recyclers is 24 hours
  • Previously players would get access to recyler at Level 21 (6,000 /loyalty), crafting recyclers is gained now at Level 18 (3,500 /loyalty)

When you craft the recycler, it will look like a box in your inventory until the skin loads and when you place it, it will look like a box as well. Once placed, of course it will become a recycler as you can see below.

Initially, I’ll be starting off using the same settings for everyone, but it’s important to note I can adjust quite a bit with this new method including different settings for different levels. Each different level can have different limits, cooldowns, ratios of return, ratios for scrap, speed and some other settings too.

I mention this because a few of of you have mentioned taking issue with Facepunch’s adjustment to returned scrap on recycling. For now, I’m going to keep it simple and leave it at the default setting, but over the next couple weeks, I’ll make some changes as I hear some feedback about it.

Vanillatopia Improvements

There are a couple of fixes I made on Vanillatopia based on some much appreciated feedback!

  • Helicopter max life cut by 50%. ThanksĀ MrNiceGuy & ATaXia!
  • Helicopter now can be harvested after 5 seconds (was 8 minutes) ThanksĀ ATaXia!
  • Sign Artist, the plugin that allows you to put images on signs now has the proper permissionsĀ /sil <imagepath>Ā ThanksĀ ATaXia!
  • Skin perks,Ā  the plugin that gives items special abilities based on skin, is now working! Go get yourself a 2 x damage bolty! šŸ™‚ ThanksĀ ATaXia!
  • Auto SearchLights are now operational. You can use /rustnet and /sl to remotely control your lights!Ā ThanksĀ ATaXia!
  • With Blueprints unlocked completely, it makes no sense to have them in barrels! I reviewed the list to ensure there were none enabled.Ā ThanksĀ ATaXia!
  • Shotgun Incendiary ammo was only stacking to 64 while other ammo stacked to 256.Ā ThanksĀ ATaXia!Ā I went through the stackings and fixed a few:
    • Ammo shotgun fire stacks to 256
    • Diving Fins stacks to 256
    • Diving Mask stacks to 256
    • Diving Tank stacks to 256
    • Diving Wetsuit stacks to 256
    • Geiger Counter stacks to 256
    • Fishingrod Handmade stacks to 256 (yes, it’s coming!)
    • Hazmatsuit Scientist Peacekeeper stacks to 256
    • Horsemeat Burned stacks to 256
    • Horsemeat Cooked stacks to 256
    • Horsemeat Raw stacks to 256

Modtopia Improvements

I’ve also made a few changes to Modtopia based on some much appreciated feedback!

  • Quest requirements were a bit high for the 1 week wipe cycle. I cut the requirements and rewards in half. ThanksĀ ATaXia!
  • Quest cooldowns were adjusted to 2 days – previously 1 day.
  • Underwater loot and basic crates were a little weak. I’ve upped the loot in them.

WebSite Improvements

I did some work on the post comments. Now they’re better formatted, but also as the poster you have more control over what you’re posting as well. It was fairly difficult before to get a point across when unable to quote, bold words and such. Now it’s all good. Comment on this post to check them out! šŸ™‚

Thursday’s Wipe

Keep in mind another map wipe is coming up on Thursday. Blueprints will remain. I’m liking the weekly wipe cycle. Tell me what you think!

On the following Thursday I expect the monthly patch which may have some interesting goodies in it! I’ll post shortly about some of the things Facepunch is planning for all of us!

Tank Hunter, Challenges, Perks

Phew! Got a lot of stuff for you Bumfuzzlers! Bunch of fixes to a few situations on Modtopia thanks to some great feedback and also some changes I think you’ll all like! Especially you big game hunters šŸ™‚ For everyone else, Skin Perks is back to full strength! Read on!

Various Improvements

  • Code lock auto placement to boxes, doors, lockers, cupboards now works. It was a permission issue due to recent loyalty level changes (/code) – thanks CannonFodder!
  • Added ability to keep loot logs, but after a few players got kicked, I suspected it and disabled it!
  • Replaced Tempered Steel hatchet and Muddy Converse boot skins in the Hunter kit and in the Loot. They were removed from the Steam workshop. They should now work as Skin Perks with proper dodge and upgrade bonuses –Ā Thanks ATaXiA!
  • Spaz 12 Shotgun was added to the hunter kit for player challenges (/pc) –Ā Thanks ATaXiA!
  • Christmas items added to Christmas presents and stockings such as trees, garland, etc. –Ā Thanks ATaXiA!
  • Jason Vorhees NPC now gives Halloween related items so he can be more spooky! –Ā Thanks ATaXiA!
  • Skin Perks should now work properly. For some reason only a few were, but now all 100+ of them should –Ā Thanks ATaXiA!
  • Handyman was thought to repair without resources. I verified it does in fact use resources and enabled it again (/handyman) – Thanks MrNiceGuy!
  • Explosive distance kills will no longer be recorded in Player Challenges (/pc) – ThanksĀ ATaXiA!

Outstanding Issues

  • Walking on a moving drawbridge will result in getting kicked due to a fly hack violation. The plugin author is aware and says he’ll look into it (/bridge.help) This also effects Vanillatopia – ThanksĀ jarbar113 & ATaXia!
  • You can accidentally remove tuna can lamp from elevator and break it. Plugin author believes it’s due to a plugin conflict so I’m trying to track it down. Best advise, don’t use the elevator with your hammer out. If it’s not out, you won’t get the open to remove the tuna lamp (/newlift /liftaid) – Thanks CannonFodder!
  • The SuperHeli sometimes comes out at the same time as Chinooks. It’s believed the issue may be related to skipping night – ThanksĀ ATaXia!

New Player Challenges

Along with the fixes to explosive distance kills, we now have 3 more titles – Tank Killer, Heli Hunter and Bot Hunter.

  • APC Kills [TankHunter] – most Bradley kills
  • Helicopter Kills [HeliHunter] – most SuperHeli kills
  • NPC Kills [BotHunter] – Most Bot/NPC kills

Check Player Challenges (/pc) to see who the leaders are! Each title will get you a kit (/kit) that will give you some goodies! I expect I’ll be updating the kits for challenges over the next couple weeks. I think they can be better, but we’ll see.

Gestures, Oak, Floaters

There’s a bunch of things in the Rust pipeline I wanted to make sure you Bumfuzzlers knew about. Here’s a quick rundown of some goodies coming our way!

Floaters

Finally, players won’t be able to run out into the ocean to deny attackers loot. In the coming update, bodies float in the water and will even travel down streams with the flow of the water! Very nice update to enhance the realism!

Gestures

Finally gestures seem to be closer to reality with this video posted on Twitter by one of the Rust developers. Check out the video below to see the player wave hello, give a thumbs up/down, clap, surrender, give an ok sign and even point! This is really awesome!

Motor Boats

The motor boats that we’ll see in the next patch coming on April 5th now has some updated looks as it’s been polished and textured. It now has storage and requires fuel to run.

This water craft won’t be craftable and is said to disappear after about an hour – presumably if it’s not used. You can find it spawning on beaches and near lighthouses. Should be a nice addition.

Bullet Impact

Apparently now bullets will kick up the surface of water properly, but at the moment, at least in the staging branch, it just works on the ocean. I assume this is coming to streams soon.

Chinook

The Chinook is coming in this next patch is seems! It’ll be awesome to have a new event. What’s awesome is that they seem to have made it somewhat intelligent and it’s said they will be updating the Helicopter with that same intelligent AI in the future!

Scientists

They’ve been tweaking things a bit and it seems there is now a delay between sighting players and shooting at players. Also, they should be spawning at junk piles by default.

Skin Loading Fixes

I have had nothing but issues with plugins that use skins for roughly a month. It affected the loading of Skins for players and plugins like SkinBox (allows you to change skins of items /skinbox), SkinLoot (spawns in various skins for SkinPerks), SkinPerks (gives special powers to skins – “still broken it seems :'(” ), PlayersSkins (allows players to set default skins for items) and I believe even LustyMap (the map shown using key M and in upper left).

Apparently this last Thursday they’ve made some updates which have allows many of the plugins to work again. I’ll be tweaking all of this stuff soon and posting separately about it, but I’m hoping to see the server getting back to normal soon!

Oak Trees

The Rust landscape should get a great makeover soon with some new trees. In the next patch we’ll see Oak trees of all variations of leafy to bare, to dead.

In the future we’re going to see birch and beach trees too! You can see a pic of them below.

They’ve made some really nice graphical improvements over the recent months. I’m very impressed from where it’s come.

Hair Styles

Facepunch wants to ensure we get an assortment of player look and feel. They’re going to be adding shaved heads with larger beards, short afro’ish hairdos and even ginger setups!

I’ve made a lot of small tweaks to both Vanillatopia and Modtopia which will hopefully equate to some improved gameplay for you Bumfuzzlers! We’ve got everything from resource spawning to meteor showers! Check it out!

Resource Spawning

The resources were spawning a bit slow on Vanillatopia so I decided to take a look at resource spawning on both Vanillatopia and Modtopia to see if I could make some improvements. Here’s what I changed:

  • Vanillatopia
    • Resources respawn 2x faster
    • Resources increased by 10%
  • Modtopia
    • Resources respawn 2x faster
    • Resources decreased by 10%

I decided to lower the resources on Modtopia because resource gathering is already very high and with all the plugins, this could increase performance for some people with lower end computers. Maybe some of you will get longer distance kills even! The amount of difference in count for instance is about 30 trees over the entire map.Ā  I doubt it will be noticed and of course let me know if you feel any pain from this change and we can change it back. Keep in mind this is a change for all resources so it affects trees, animals, mushrooms, etc. It’s critical that I get feedback from you about how this is working. (Thanks to Rayyy for feedback)

Meteor Shower Event

What would life be without the occasional weather related disaster? Well, now, every so often, meteors will rain from the sky! They are random, in random areas of the map and they may be extreme or mild. They can absolutely do damage to players and buildings (but not much) so watch out! These showers come with falling debris in the form of resources!

This video does not do it justice, but it gives you an idea.

I’ve only added this event to Modtopia for now, but I’ll consider adding it to Vanillatopia in the coming weeks.

Bumfuzzler Forum

I’ve made a few additions to the forums that will hopefully make it more usable and friendly. Please enjoy the following tweaks!

  • Increased the font size in various areas
  • Added a visual editor for posting
  • Checkbox now default to notify you on responses
  • Can now post images inline
  • Can now use @mention and person will be notified

Loot Adjustments

I’ve made a few tweaks to the loot on both Vanillatopia and Modtopia in various forms. Here’s a run down of the changes.

  • Vanillatopia
    • Turned off blueprint spawning as they’re unlocked (I hope this time for good) (Thanks toĀ Freshmeat911 for feedback)
    • Helicopter Pilot Eject event: the pilot now has inventory to lootĀ (Thanks to Rayyy for suggestions)
    • Changed rarity of the Smoke Rocket to 3, the same as other rockets. It was disabled.Ā (Thanks to Rayyy for feedback)
    • Smoke Rockets now spawn in Elite Crates.Ā (Thanks to Rayyy for feedback)
  • Modtopia
    • Autokit for VIP: Removed food and torch, added 5 radiation pills (Thanks Orion and WRecKLeSSĀ for feedback)
    • SuperHeli loot was weak. Now all crates will have at least 3 items each instead of sometimes 1 or 2 (Thanks toĀ Obey Mike Opp for feedback)
    • SuperHeli loot now matches the SuperBradley loot tables (Thanks toĀ Obey Mike Opp for feedback)
    • Ensured SuperHeli crates were set to 3 for regular and refuel events and at 1 for the pilot eject eventĀ (Thanks toĀ Obey Mike Opp for feedback)
    • SuperBradley crates reduced from 4 to 3

Plane Crash

As has happened on Modtopia, it appears the plane was indeed crashing – into mountains! lol I’ve adjusted it’s fly height to 5 meters higher. Hopefully that will be the end to that. (Thanks to Rayyy for feedback)

Thanks to feedback from you Bumfuzzlers, I’ve made a couple of updates to the servers which should hopefully make things purr a bit better.

Item Stacking

I noticed that several new items were added to the game that I didn’t account for in the stacking plugin settings. Now I have. The following items now stack up to 256.

Additionally, I had most items stacked at 200 (except for weapons which are not stacked). This seems to be fairly good. Most items didn’t originally stack at all and ammo was stacked at either 64 or 128. Now I’ve bumped everything up to 256.

Additionally, I’ve changed two items:

  • Crude Oil was originally stackable to 500, now it’s 100,000
  • Scrap was originally stackable to 1,000, now it’s 100,000

These changes were made for Bumfuzzler Modtopia and Bumfuzzler Vanillatopia. Thanks to Orion for his feedback about this!

Blueprint Spawning

With blueprints being unlocked for everyone on Bumfuzzler Vanillatopia by default, I turned off having them spawn in the loot. This way, it’ll make way for some other items instead. It’s like a loot boost because there will always be another usable item in the loot instead of a blueprint.

Helicopter Refuel Event

It appears the Helicopter Refuel event creates a bit of an issue at the Launch Site as it spawns NPCs which are very difficult to kill on top of that main building due to space. Because of this, I’ve decided to remove the Launch Site as one of the refueling options. Now the helicopter will only land to refuel at the Airfield, Powerplant and Harbors. Hopefully this eliminates the issues of NPCs bunching up together as those monuments are more wide open.

Airdrop Loot

I’ve made a couple tweaks to the airdrop thanks to some feedback fromĀ WRecKLeSS, but I’ll be looking for feedback to see if they need more adjusting.

  • I finally found where the Pump Jack was spawning. That worthless item is now gone from the loot tables
  • Airdrops now drop between 4 and 8 items instead of 6 and 8 making it slightly more dynamic. You could get 4 items, you could get 8.
  • I removed several low value items from airdrops to make the loot slightly better

Night Gather Rates

More feedback fromĀ WRecKLeSS proved valuable as it appeared the night bonus wasn’t working as expected. I took a look at it and realized I needed to do it in a completely different way with a different modification.

NOTE: These rates are fixed, but due to Zlevels, your rates will rise. For instance, 125% of Zlevel 10 in Wood is of course not the same as 125% of Zlevel 20 in Wood. Take notice of the Quarry boosting.

I’ve adjusted the multipliers as follows:

  • Day Rate Quarry Multiplier: 250%
  • Day Rate Pickup Multiplier: 100%
  • Day Rate Resource Multiplier: 100%
  • Day Rate Resource Bonus Multiplier: 100%
  • Day Rate Resource High Quality MetalĀ Multiplier: 100%
  • Day Rate Crop Gather Multiplier: 100%
  • Night Rate Quarry Multiplier: 500%
  • Night Rate Pickup Multiplier: 125%
  • Night Rate Resource Multiplier: 125%
  • Night Rate Resource Bonus Multiplier: 125%
  • Night Rate Resource High Quality Metal Multiplier: 125%
  • Night Rate Crop Gather Multiplier: 125%

I’ll keep adjusting multipliers as I receive feedback. Hopefully this should increase the desire to let the sun go down.

While Facepunch has left early access and patches will be reduced to once per month (on 1st Thursday of each month) they are still making changes to the code in preparation for that patch so we can know what they have upcoming! So, Bumfuzzlers, let’s take a look at some of the things they’re working on! Keep in mind I can’t promise all these items will be in the next patch, but they are currently working on them.

  • Spotlights will now require Building Privileges
  • Bandages and syringes have info panels
  • Repair benches no longer require wood to build
  • Repairing now costs 20% of items full cost instead of 50%
  • New graphic setting for world reflections improves look
  • Chinook Airdrop Event is in the works
  • AI Improvements, how they interact and where they spawn
  • New bushes added, willow and spice color variances
  • Chainsaw fully textured and animated to be added
  • No-Recoil scripts are officially declared cheats. You’ve been warned!

All in all, it appears they are continuing work on the game and are prepared to make some pretty epic additions like the Chinook event and the Chainsaw! It’s going to be awesome to find someone with a wood base and cut down their door like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre! šŸ™‚

Big things going on with Rust and the server! I’ve got some updates on quarries, cars, plane crashing, the superheli and Rust leaving early access! Check this out for what you Bumfuzzlers need to know including a Valentine’s Day event preview!

Boss of Hearts

Well, Valentine’s Day is coming up and the server wants you to be its valentine šŸ™‚ I’ve placed a February preview on one of the islands, but be careful. It’s called the Heart house and it’s home to the Boss of Hearts! She’s a little more of a brute than the other NPCs on the server. Get close enough to the Heart House and you’ll get yourself a hearty (get it? lol) kit haha Go at it and have some fun. I’ll be working on it a little more as I have time!

SuperHeli <3

I made a few small changes to the helicopter refuel event as it appeared to be somewhat easy for players. All you had to do was kill a few easy NPCs and then the SuperHeli sat there like a sitting duck waiting to be destroyed. I’ve made the following changes:

  • Max time it will decide to refuel was lowed to 500 from 600
  • Min time it will decide to refuel was lowered to 200 from 300
  • Time to refuel is now 120 lowered from 180
  • NPC Spawn Radius is now 5m instead of 4m

Hopefully it will give people less time to take out the NPCs and the SuperHeli which will make it slightly more challenging. I was going to enable the guns on it while refueling, but after testing it was too over powered. Thanks to Orion for his feedback and testing on the event.

Also, after speaking with the plugin author of HeliControl, it appears that the reason sometimes it appears the SuperHeli spawns so often is due to the fact that it spawns based on a timer and that timer doesn’t use the death of the last SuperHeli to determine the next spawn.

This means if the Superheli spawned at 4pm and is set to spawn every two hours and the pilot ejection event happens 4:20pm and then the refuel event happens at 4:59pm, the SuperHeli may still spawn at 5pm as it isn’t aware of the other events. The plugin author is going to detect the time of the last SuperHeli death and change the spawning to work based on that last death. I can’t promise when that will happen. In turn, expect sometimes the SuperHeli may haunt you.

Quarry Loot Fix

I believed the Quarries were set to output 5 times the normal amount, but the setting I used actually meant that it would spit out 5 of whatever item every 30-60 seconds. This made for some very slow earnings. I’ve now changed it so it’s 5 times that. Thanks to Jarl Balgruuf for noticing the slow trickle of resources.

Plane Crash off Center

There’s been a few times where the low-flying plane would crash into the mountains and this seemed mostly due to it flying over the very center of the map each time it spawned. A few of you asked to have it more varied in its flight path too. Now there’s a fix to ensure the plane doesn’t spawn over the center of the map each time like it once did. Hopefully this gives more players a chance at it.

Flippin’ Cars

The vehicles have had a bunch of issues, but most glaringly is the fact that sometimes you can get stuck and screwed up if the car flips upside down! Well now, it will automatically eject players from the car when it goes upside down and there’s now a command (/flipcar) that you can use to flip an upside down car over!

Rust Leaving Early Access

It’s hard to believe it, but Facepunch has finally declared on February 8th they will be leaving early access, but what does this mean to you? There’s surely some things that will change. They suggest one of them won’t be staff dedicated to the game and cite the reasons for making the change that they finally can say for sure they know where they are going with the game lol Sure took them long enough to do that! Two main things stand out to me as major changes:

  • Game updates will be changed to once per month instead of once per week
  • The game price will increase from $19.99 to $34.99

Surely this will save time for server admin like me as I can say updating the server every week can be challenging. For you Bumfuzzlers, you should have a more stable game with more meaningful patches each month. At least, that’s my expectation šŸ™‚ I could be wrong.
